I was told that ALL \'96 GTS\'s were the pace car edition,,,,T or F ??

Is this True, or False ?? I was told that ALL '96 GTS's were Pace Car editions. I personally thought that it was a separate deal, and they ( Dodge ) probably know which VIN numbered cars were the ones. The guy told me that anyone can order the pace car sticker set and put'em on the doors, and Walla !!. Not that I would do that, I just want someone to let me know for sure so I can know the facts. I would have to say it's False, that's my guess.

EVERY ONE BUT YOURS!

Actually, I believe this is the one of the pace cars to which you refer, driven by Robert Lutz, former Vice President of Chrysler, now head of Product Development for GM, in the 1996 80th running of the Indianapolis 500. Only FOUR 1996 Blue / White GTS pace cars were produced.

The 1996 GTS came with a Pace Car Decals (same as seen in photo above). That is as close to a pace car as you could purchase.

I know of several people who still have the decal set unused.

The decal set did not come with the car. They were offered for sale through Viper Magazine a while back. I'm sure they were all sold out years ago. I happen to have two of the sets.

I also thought the only produced two of the actual pace cars. The one that Lutz drove and one backup car. Maybe the other two were the cars they had at the Indy airport during the Indy 500 and on tour around the country.

Partial Credit!
If you picked up your car at CAAP in 1996, the decal kit came with the car. Correct on ViperMag sales of decal kits. Correct again: 2 were produced, Just 2 in 1996. 4 were produced only if you count 1991 ! (2 1991, 2 1996) 1 '91 and 1 96 is in the Indy 500 OPC museum, the one Lutz and Rutherford drove, and the 91 of Carroll Shelby. The other 96 went to CAAP and then destined for the Walter P. Chrysler museum with 1991 #2.

The 1996 Pace Car paint job was originally SUPPOSED to be retired (as was the Indy Ram Combo) after 1996. The car was so late, that 400+ ANGRY paid buyers were carried-over to 1997, and allowed that color no charge. It cost extra for non-rollover orders. Dang, I wish it had retired.

Thanks for the info. I knew I was right ( again....lol ), and I'll have to update this gentlemans information he's sharing. Anyone know where these cars reside today ?? Do they know what VIN numbers they carry ? Why would they sell the decal sets to the public if only 2 ( or 4 ) of these cars were made ??

Pace Car Afficianados.........

I love Pace Cars! Groupie even. I hold an Int'l Pace Car License from ICSCC, and have (proudly) mentored a fellow VCA member into obtaining his. I've seen OPC duty in FIA, SCCA, ICSCC, Viper Days, and (1) NASCAR event! Also instructed/oriented a CART OPC driver at PIR, and had a CART OPC driver as an instructor in 1993. Johnny Rutherford, too!

We Vipers raise a LOT of charity $$ since 1993, and have a new O.P.C. T-shirt and Golf shirt debuting at VOI-7. Proceeds go to Dornboecher's Children's Hospital. Only Tony C and Cody R have seen the shirt artwork: GORGEOUS !

Features the Oreca GTS-R #91 car at Rolex 24. Full overhead shot of 91 car in the pits, with Hughes beside, and Olivier behind the wheel. "Portland Int'l Raceway" across the bottom. Oreca raced here 2 years as well. Genuine ARTWORK, not just a rendition of a Viper. Please Stay Tuned. Autographs from Olivier Beretta likely available!
