If you were looking at getting a used viper which one would you buy?

There is such a drastic difference in a Gen I or a Gen II that you need to take a ride or drive them and decide.
I would opt for a Gen II... Now RT/10 , GTS, that's another thread..

My favorite 4 vipers in decreasing order:

'97 RT/10 Blue/White stripe (but I'd need a GTS blue/white hood with the NACA duct) - too rare to swap hoods

'97 Blue/white GTS - No ABS, which is the kiss of death for me using it as a daily driver.

'01 Blue/silver ACR - too hard to keep clean

'01 Red/White GTS - what mine will be once I have some $ for paint.

Yeah, so I went with the one fourth on the list, but hey waddya want from me?

I like 98 the best. Still has the lumpy cam, upgraded alarm, stronger wheels. Last year of 17 inch as well as foglight lens covers, both of which I happen to like.

Second for me would be a tossup between the 97 and 99.

You can't go wrong with any of them, including the Gen I.

Both cars provide reliability and FUN!!! It's just a matter of preference. Nice thing about the RT is that you can always go *******. Can't say that about the GTS

Gen II is more daily driver friendly.....Kurt

I've been thinking of doing just that. There is a blue/white gts hood in the acces. area of the classifieds. he wants $6000 though. tough decision

The 98-99 RT/10 is THE choice. You get real windows and more power (benefits over the gen1), you get the option to go ******* (benefit over the gts), and you get the secret alarm disconnect (benefit over the 97 gts, which you will rue the day it goes off and you can't readily disconnect). The blue/white stripes gts is cool and all, but I think the 98-99 outweighs it. Now, between 98-99, 99 gets you 18" wheels, but I think you lose the fog lens covers (which are nice). You can look on the info page or do some searches for other changes between them, but they're minor.

Now wait a darn minute there! The RT/10's won't be made either and it seems as far as I can tell the SRT's are not a great hit among the current viper clan. Now here is my advice..

Four words...

It will never sound like a Mustang. But spend $150 and replace the muffler with H, X or straight pipes and you will be surprised. An equally as good of mod as tubes and filters.

My 98 RT/10 has had two oil leaks. 1. Very unusual leak at the soldered fitting at the oil cooler. TIG’d it up, all is well. 2. a very slow leak began at 36K somewhere under the pan. So minimal I haven’t even researched where it’s coming from.

The suspension was changed (improved) in 96 for both RT and GTS. The 97GTS is a great car (I owned one). The cooling system can be improved by installing a new fan assembly, call Jon B./PartsRack for the price(low cost). The GTS is a great weekend getway car. Room for a couple bags and a date or wife. The RT's (suggest 96 or later, 97 if roll-up windows are wanted)are great open air rides but can be a little hard to stuff the bags and soft top in the trunk. They (RT/GTS) are great cars with different personalities.

After daily research for approx. 6 weeks, I decided to go with a GEN II 99 RT/10. Don't get me wrong, either one would be a treat to have. My decision was based on several requirements:

1) upgraded interior
2) real windows
3) rear exhaust
4) engine mods
5) suspension mods

In any case, the east coast is warming up and I'm having lots of fun on sunny days. Also, it's nice to have the coolest car in the parking lot at work.

I have a red 1999 RT/10.
Love it!
Extremely reliable and extremely fun to drive.
You get the interior upgrades and the wider tires.
Depends really on what you have to spend. Low mile '99's will probably be in the mid to high 50's

Would just be for weekend fun. I am not sure if I should keep the cobra or sell it and just get the viper now. If I keep the cobra, I will buy a house and then get the viper but probably an older one like a 95.

Who needs a house? 2001 GTS and livin in Apartment #24!

Houses are for older (smarter) people

Here are the ones that I was considering:

95 Red or Black RT/10 - want to put the 2002 Viper Rims on it.
97 blue/white stripe GTS
or
1998 or 1999 Red or Black RT/10

Keep in mind that I want to choose the car that will have the least amount of problems and provide the most "FUN" Factor.

Thanks!

Out of the choices given, the 97 GTS was my favorite color. However, I'd buy the 99 (GTS preferably) if I were you. If you have to get an RT then go ahead but NEVER if a GTS is available!

Gotta have fresh air blowing thru my three "Homer Simpson" hairs, and Gotta have Side pipes!

Gen 1 RT/10

Make almost same rear wheel HP and more torque as compared to some Gen 2. (result from Heffners dyno)

I'm aiming towards a black 93-94 RT (I love sidepipes)I also fear airbags so that's a big selling point for me.

Just add a hood, some ABS, a gen II engine, give it a factory waranty, and make every day sunny during the rest of my period of ownership, and I'll pay you a hella lot of money for it

(not being an *** , just convincing myself that I was right when I went with choice #4 on my list -- a very difficult feat mind you)
