intake sensor question

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here. I purchased a Gen II about 2 months ago. It is a 2002 final edition.

I just purchased an intake for it. When the intake came, I discovered there were no whole for the "sensors" that were attached to the original air box.

There was also not a filter for the hose that went to the airbox that would create suction when I would turn the car on. For that hose, I just bought a little filter.

Both of the other hoses I just tie wrapped out of the way.

What were they for and would I be wise to drill a whole in the side of the intake and attach one/both?

One of them was some type of sensor. What happens if I leave this unattached? Do I lose performance or is it strictly for emissions?

The other hose, has nothing in it as far as I can tell. I pulled it off, and could blow straight through it. When the car is running, no air is sucked through it. What is it for?

Thanks a bunch,
Mike

The passenger-side tube is your bypass air inlet (used for idle control). That line doesn't really have to go into the airbox, you could just put a filter on it. the tube on the driver side is your crankcase (valve cover) vent. There is a small foam-like filter in the airbox that it connects to and just recirculates your crankcase gases (I think that's just for emissions purposes). The sensor is your inlet air temp. sensor. I would have guessed that you would be showing an error code if that's not connected because it is used in computing your fuel and spark.

Nope, no error code as of yet. I have read others say it takes a while for the computer to reprogram itself or something like that. Hopefully it won't give me an error code.

Thanks for the reply!

Caught something... did you mean the passenger side tubing was the one I had to put the filter on? That is the one that is sucking in air, the drivers side doesn't seem to be doing much of anything.

Yes, it's sucking air because it is supplying air to the engine to keep it running, the butterflies are closed when idling. There is a solenoid on the block that is controlling the airflow through this tube.

you need to have a filter on the other hose as well. it is the crankcase breather (driver side). when the engine is running, it DOES **** in air, just not much. Without a filter, you are sucking dirt and dust directly into the engine internals.

I drove it for a day before I realized that. They both have a filter on them now.

If you have not hooked up the air intake temp. sensor and you are not throwing a code then you may want to check and make sure that your check engine light is working. You should have thrown a code within the first couple of miles driving if not immediately. You need this sensor connected for proper running and a/f configuration. If the application for the product you purchased was for a viper it should have placement for the sensor. If not just remove and drill a 3/4" hole in proper placement away from moving parts and where the plug will reach, then go to your local hardeware store and purchase a rubber electrical gromlet in that size and you will be able to thread the sensor into the tube and all will be well

OK, going to go do that now. Bored stiff here anyway today. Haven't had the check engine light come on yet. Driven it 3 times for a total of maybe 5 miles. I have it plugged in, but I just tie wrapped it out of the way, trying to keep it away from heat.

Thanks for all the tips everyone.

OK did it. What a pain. I had to rent a drill because mine didn't have a 1/2 inch opening. Then the gromlet opening was to small and the sensor kept popping out. Anyway, it is done. The check engine light turns on when I first start the car with all other lights, but then turns on as the car fires up.

thanks again.

Greg, these are the ones I bought. I won them off ebay for $103.00. After I placed the bid, I came to this board and found others I would have preferred to buy. Anyway, I had to buy 2 extra filters for the crankcase vent and the idle controller, and I had to drill a hole in the side of one for the temp. sensor, but it seems to work. It also somewhat smashed my radiator hose because the cones are so big, but it still works.
