Can anyone help me out? I just installed a new mgw shift knob on my 94 rt, when I was taking the old knob off the whole shaft came loose and now turns freely but not too loose. well I put the new knob on it looks great by the way it shortens the throw considerably. My question is do I need to tighten the shaft back up and if so do I just keep turning it or is there something down below I need to do?

The shaft has a jam nut on the top and the bottom. The bottom jam nut is loose. Just grip the shaft with vise grips and turn till it tightens. The shaft will thread down till the the jam nut bottoms out on the unthreaded portion of the shaft.

This will work if the knob is still in a comfortable position. If it is not you will have to:

1. Remove the Knob.
2. Remove the console fascia.
3. Remove the center console bezel.
4. Drill out the rivets on the inner boot and remove.
5. Now the jam nut and shaft height can be adjusted.

Note - on my pic that I replaced the rivets with screw inserts. The center bezel is easy put tricky. If you have to go this route review the fastening points from the second pic posted below.

The shifter shaft is two parts. The lower part that goes into the plate that bolts to the transmission and the top shaft that the knob goes on. The two shafts are connected by a rubber coupling that is probably a heat/vibration isolator. This coupling can become un-bonded allowing the shifter end of the shaft to twist. If this is the problem, you will have to replace the shifter. I had to replace mine. I've frequently seen the shifter assembly for sale on ebay, probably take outs from cars that upgraded to some aftermarket unit. I bought mine on ebay for $12, it looked like it was new.
