Is this still open to the public to spectate? I've been to two previous Viper Days events at VIR, but that was as a guest of an owner. Since I've moved from Virginia I haven't been able to make it to any events, but it would be nice to come back and take some good pictures of this years event.

Every event I've done at VIR is open to the public to spectate. When I signed up for Viper Days there's a section for listing the number of guests, but that's just if they want to be included in the food functions. I'm 99.99% sure you can just show up to watch and snap pics.

Is Ron Hickey still around? He was gracious enough to invite me down for the two years I had gone, but I lost contact with him over so many moves from state to state since then.

I would imagine many of the Carolina's VCA members will be there. Every year we get at least 15 cars including myself. VIR is a great track to run. Very fast, great facilities, and very safe (as race tracks go)!

Bugeater's got a "bat" up his sleeve...

Wife and I are attending (I need adult supervision). I'm driving SRT, and she's driving ACR (known to whiny Jon as "Freeman's ******).

Think again if you think VIR is Safe as race tracks go. Just because there seems to be a lot of runoff, its far from safe. I have seen some serious crashes on the uphill esses as well as turn 1 & 14. Ask the turn 9 corner workers how many cars have crashed into thier corner station.

Just a question, how would you rate road atlanta ? safe or unsafe & why.

I'm signed up for VIR Viper Days too!

Is Ron Hickey still around?

Yep, I saw him at Heffner's Performance the weekend before last. He is the VA/MD VCA Prez.

Re: Just signed up for Viper Days @ VIR July 17th & 18th! Who\'s going?

I have run VIR many times over the past 4 years and have been witness to several accidents. In fact, I am a member of the Flagging and Communications crew and have worked corner 9!

I still think VIR is very safe compared to tracks with little to no run off room. Watkins Glen is a great example. If you go off at the Glen you are going to either hit a wall or go into a gravel trap that is deep enough to damage your car. Having said that, you have to realize that any track that allows you to reach speeds in excess of 150 can be dangerous. Mechanical failure or, more commonly, driver failure is always a possibility.

I can't really answer your question on Road Atlanta first hand as I have only spectated at the facility.

I'm hoping to go, but haven't signed up yet. Never tracked my viper yet. Is it ok to run on 19inch pilots? Any tips appreciated.

ViperDays @ VIR has traditionally been only open to guests of owners, as opposed to the general public. Probably not hard to get on a guest list though.

Fiorano,

Yes, the 19" Pilot Sports will be just fine for the track. You will be assigned an instructor that will be in the car with you the entire weekend, as well as classroom instruction to help you get familiar with the track and your car. You will learn a significant amount about your car, and it will be a very safe and secure environment for you to learn in. One word of caution though, you will have sore face muscles from all of the smiling you will be doing when you return to work on Monday.

Hope to see you at VIR.

NDW: Sounds like a great time. Can't wait to go. BTW, I'm sure I need a helmet, any suggestions?

I will be waiting you call. If you have a local speed shop you can go there or you can wait till you go to the VIR event for one of our sponsors, Bobby Archer Motorsports, will be selling helmets at the track, 817-877-1172 We suggest a helmet of Snell 95 or 2000.

Talk to you soon!

I hate the safety/danger talk. It brings the safety fanatics out of the woodwork and they spoil things for everybody.

Something odd about a Ford username who owns a Vette on a Viper discussion forum.

Yeah, the inability to STOP. Thats scary, but once he mowes the grass, I will wave goodbye to him.. ;-)

lol, actually John and I are in different "class" he wont be in my run group, unless he slums, so I only expect to compare times with him, if I am so lucky.

Re: Just signed up for Viper Days @ VIR July 17th & 18th! Who\'s going?

Chuck,

For someone that has never been to the track, it is a concern when they put their street car on the track. The safety assurance is just to let them know that in their run group (green), it is much safer than being on the street having to contend with everybody wanting to street race you in a Mustang. I think the safety concern and assurances are valid for those that have never been to the track or to a driving event.

You and I might not have those same concerns, but the first timer does. :2tu:

I hear you Newt. It's just whenever the safety issue comes up I envision all of us eventually racing simulators instead of the real thing.

First timers are the least to worry about anyway. It's guys like me that actually think they know what they're doing that are dangerous. LOL

Mike & Chuck,

You guys crack me up and sound just like me, I know just enough to be dangerous. LOL :D Too bad I didn't start this a little earlier in my life.... Oh yeah, I forgot, I couldn't afford it until now! Looking forward to meeting you both and having a good weekend of driving. My car is Mike's old car, so I want him to see it now.
