Hi -

I'm considering the purchase of a 2006 SRT10 Roadster and I'm wondering if any of you guys know anything about this particular car. It's for sale at a dealer who picked it up at an auction and they know nothing about the history of it. I'm concerned about the purchase because in my opinion, the exterior shows signs of poor maintenance (lots of scuffs and scratches) and this is raising questions about the way the overall vehicle may have been maintained.

The car is being detailed as I type this and some of those exterior flaws are being touched up, provided this is done to my satisfaction, I'll have a Viper tech go through it from top to bottom before I make my final decision.

Here are the details I have.

2006 SRT10 Roadster, Black
According to Carfax, the vehicle was leased to someone in the area of Edison NJ, it's a one owner car with 12,000 miles on it.
The Vin # is 1B3JZ65Z56V100130

Any info you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Matt

Scuffs and scratches don't "necessarily" mean the car was poorly maintained mechanically. My Ram (which I show ocassionally) is my daily driver, yet it is FILTHY much of the time. However, I maintain it in tip-top shape mechanically. Apple and oranges, I know, just sayin. The 23,000-mile black Viper I purchased in April has some paint flaws, and the lower fascia is pretty nicely scratched (car has been lowered), but overall, the car has been good so far (knock wood). Has a couple of curbed spots on the wheels as well, indicating the car had been driven.

If the car details and presents to your satisfaction, and checks out mechanically, then I think you could make an offer.

Good luck.

One possibility would be to have a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealership run a VIP report for you. This report contains all of the options the vehicle was built with, its in-service date, the selling dealership, and any service which might have been performed by any dealership. (Service performed by an independent or non-Chrysler shop will not show up.) Of particular use, especially if it truly is a one owner car, is the report usually also contains the name, address and phone number of the original purchaser.

The caveat here is that many dealerships don't appear to want to do this for people, and I have been told recently by someone in the know that Chrysler doesn't want this info shared, so maybe some directive came down from the top at some point. (I guess I could see why Chrysler might want to protect the identity of the original purchaser, but everything else in the report is fairly benign.) Anyway, if you have a friend "on the inside" or just luck across a helpful dealership, tech or sales guy, you might be able to find someone to run the report for you.

Sometimes, you can also get vehicle owner information from the DMV in the state it was registered, but with the ever stricter privacy laws and such, this is also an avenue which is a dead end in many places. Still, it doesn't hurt to ask.

I hope that helps! Best of luck in your research!

Thanks Jon -

By using the Carfax report, I was able to get in touch with a shop that serviced the car a few times. They were familiar with the previous owner. Hopefully he'll contact me, if not I'll just have a Viper tech go through the car and make my decision with the info I get from him.

I would be a little concerned if there is any paint over spray under the hood, or there are different shades of black and very hard to match...especially if any accident history.....tires are the originals ?? With 12000 miles thay should "talk" to you, pressure problems, scuffing, cupping, ...I would also want to see it up on the lift especially since it is at a dealer....
