Looks like my exhaust is messing up my paint

Well, being catless, mufflerless and Borla headers seems to have a bad side effect. It appears unburnt gasoline is coming out of my rear exhaust and "staining" my paint. The bottom of the bumper is turning black and is unable to be cleaned..instead of the **** being on the paint, it looks like its actually "in" the paint. Will adding a muffler take care of this or do I also need to go with HF cats as well? I really love the sound of the car now, but I dont want to have to repaint the back of the car every year either. I want the car to be loud and mean sounding so what options do I have to keep the Nascar-type loudness but also keep my rear bumper red instead of stained?

i am catless, borlas mufflers in the sills and straight pipes, but dont have that problem? i get little black flakes, but no staining marks.

can you maybe point your exhaust tips down or move the tips further out away from the rear bumper?

Not to mention being deaf Chad, if you really do have unburnt gas (hydrocarbons) coming out the tail end, a muffler won't do anything for you other than control sound. You might have to spring for the HF cats.

On second thought, If your really into the noise level being as loud as possible, you could always do a side pipe conversion.

I'm gonna check into John's recommendations and see if they work (they sound like a cheaper fix ). At idle, revving up and WOT, I love it. On decel, it really is TOO loud. But I hardly ever slow down, so thats not much of a problem If John's ideas dont work, I guess I may have to quiet her down a little Its raining now, but I'll try to get pics of the "stain" later.

I've got the same problem (to an extent). Unfortunately, before it's noticed, it can get pretty bad. Washing with soap/water won't clean it. I've seen posted here before some products by Meguiars for "paint stains", but not been able to find the stuff . I've had best luck with very diluted Bar Keepers Friend. Watered down, mild abrasive. Doesn't look 100%, but better than nothing. I've also tried to find clear bra type product for rear bumper, but no luck. Keep us posted.

What if you have the tailpipes extended out 1-2" further?

Get some Meguiars or Turtle wax scratch remover. I had the same problem and either one of these products took the black stuff right off. If that doesn't work try a glazing compound then follow it up with Scratch X and a couple of very good waxings.

Simple solution... Sell the McViper and buy a black one. Or just paint it. Join the dark side. ;-)

I have "golden stain" on my silver stripes. What I've done is use polishing compound on the paint and then wax it.

You may wish to use a polished aluminium plate if that doesn't work.

Man, definetly a Rich run going on. I bet if you pulled some sprk plugs they would be sooted also. The black soot is rich run. Need a reprogram.

After about 10 trips in the car I use Meguiars paint cleaner and it does the trick!

Another solution is to try using a clay bar as it will lift most bonded contaminates out of the clear coat.

Comments like this make what I do sound trivial. I take the photos, then go home and study them and decide who my next conquest will be (much like Hef deciding on next month's centerfold). I then return in a day or 2 to let the girls know who the winning contestant is. Then we ride off into the sunset. Its actually a long, very involved, thoughtout process. For those wondering, looks like my next photo session will be on Thursday if all goes well

Thanks for the REAL answers, I'll try to find some of the products mentioned and see what works. If all else fails, I'll try Lee's chickenwing idea, but I dont think its gonna work

I think extending the tips 1/2-1" will take care of all..or much of the problem. I ran into the same thing a couple years ago when I changed out the mufflers after 30K on the Belanger header/exhaust set up.(no cats) .....Noticed staining I never had before..kind of a brownish glaze baked into the rear fascia area above the pipes. Liquid Lustre takes it right off. I'm do for another set of mufflers soon and will extend about 3/4".

I came across this stuff by chance about 7 yrs. ago at a car show. I asked a body shop/ $6 figure car builder guy, who had a couple of cars on show there, what he was using. He has restored and built cars for guys like Reggie White and been entrusted to restore cars that there were only a few ever made.(the kind where you fabricate body panels to match the original) He said he was currently using this wax and that he thought it worked pretty good. He could be using something toally different now, but I thought I'll give it it a try. Hands down, it's the best I've used to date. Winter is the real test of a wax. I've never had a wax last as long or take as many car wash washings (not Vipers )as this one. I now get it right from the website. I use it on all our vehicles.

Chad I had the same problem with mine, showed up even worse on a white car. I started out with Simple Green, didn't work. Switched to a spray-on bug and tar remover and it all came off with a lot of elbow grease. After that I buffed it with Meguiar's #83 then waxed it with Meguiar's NXT. It looks like new again. Good luck.
