Mopar Performance Wires and Radio/CD player static

Recently I changed plugs and wires, going with the blue Mopar Performance Wires. However, I frequently had annoying static coming through the speakers while using either the radio and CD player (worse on the CD player). I tried a variety of things, like verifying the ground wire that comes free when you unscrew the cowl was back in place, that all the wires were firmly in place on the plugs end and the other end, etc. Finally, I went ahead and put back on my old, original plugs, and have no static problems. Further, there didn't seem to be any performance difference, leading me to believe that the significant component to replace for maintenance purposes was the spark plugs.

Anybody need some slightly used performance wires?

Sean Roe suggested that new spark plug wires will be needed for his supercharger, so I called JonB at Parts Rack and he told me the same thing about the Mopar Performance wires. They work great for racing, but you aren't listening to CDs while racing.
JonB advised me to get Magnacor wires, which I did.

I have the "exact" problem with my 97. As soon as I put the Mopar Blue wire's on, I have been getting a popping noise out of the CD/radio player at low RPM's. I feel like a ricer at stop lights because I end up keeping revving engine to 2000 RPM's at stop lights to keep the popping at bay.

ViperGTS, I search the thread awhile ago on this and didn't find any sort of filter. Do you remember the thread name or who started it?

***?! I never saw anyone ever post anything about this static with the blue wires?! If I'd have known that, I'd have saved myself the $!!

Hey Guys thanks for the posts. I was complaining to my dealer about this problem. Now I know that it is the Blue Mopar Wires. Can someone tell me what the advantage is to the Mopar Wires compared to the Stock wires

1.) Interesting. I installed Mopar Blue wires on my 98' GTS and haven't noticed any static.

2.) The Blue wires are slightly thicker (8.5mm) and are more resistent to heat (boots). Not sure about any other advantages. Great wire, at a fair price, IMHO.

I also have the static but it's not really that bad. I'll just leave it in until next time

I have the Mopar wires and have the static too. I believe it is due to the very low resistance of the Mopar wires, about 1/10th the recommended minimum per the shop manual. I think resistor plugs would solve this but I don't know if the standard Champion plugs have resistors or if such are available.

Me too. Maybe JohnB should note that on his site's shopping cart. Or maybe Mopar should inform you in advance. I just no I would have NEVER put those things on if I would have known in advance.I noticed heavy static right after installing Mopars. It really sounds like SHEET. Completely unacceptable and unbearable. It sounds like all the speakers are blown. Like the cereal, SNAP CRACKLE POP! I pissed just thinking about it. Now I have to weight the options of scratching the hell out of my arms again, (scars from last one still visible) or just deal with it until next plug wire change! Arghhh!! Someone mentioned a filter fix. I did a search and did not find it. Anybody know the fix?? PLEASE....

If you have a sc you might need a plug wire upgrade. Higher compression may require a lower resistance path to the plug. If you have a stock engine, the wires won't buy you anything. I wouldn't change the wires unless there is a problem. If the fire inside the combustion chamber is lit, it won't do any good to try to light it more. The stock wires are probably carbon core. They have resistance that keeps the high voltage pulse from having sharp edges, they round the pulse. Rounding the pulse prevents high power radio frequency harmonics from being generated. No harmonics, no radio or CD interference. It's a law of physics. A filter on the DC power input of the radio might help keep the unwanted signal from entering through the DC power input. The filter will have a coil choke in line and a capacitor to ground. Radio Shack probably sells this kind of filter. The interference may not be entering through the power input. In this case there may not be any solution to remedy this.

Add the red MSD wires to the list of major noise makers. Got mine at Parts Rack and nothing but snap, crackle, pop ever since.

Slaughterj, are these the standard Mopar Performance replacement wires or the GTS-R wires? We use the GTS-R wires with our Lethal packages exclusively and haven't had any issues at all, stock stereo or otherwise.
