There was an interesting comment on changing oil last week. Someone recommended draining the oil overnight, in an attempt to get more old oil out of the engine. I changed the oil yesterday and measured the residual that drained after the initial draining.

I let the oil drain for five minutes, I then drained the remainder into a measuring vessel. In the fist two hours an additional 3/4 pint of oil drained. In another eight hours, a 1/4 pint drained. It sure is interesting that a full pint of oil can be extracted after a typical oil change.

I added oil carefully to make sure I hit the full mark on the dipstick. The car was completely level. The car is a 97. The manual indicates a capacity of eight quarts. It took exactly nine quarts to hit the full mark. .

Good point ol Jack. Most of you should change at 2500 or before, and that pint still in the motor is still good.Being a NOS car I change 1000-1500miles or 100lbs or NOS.Filters get dirty not oil.

Cody:

I have the stock oil pan, however, I did the windage tray mod, baffle change, ACR adapter and the trap doors. However, none of that should change the oil capacity. When I did all the oil system mods, approximately another quart drained (adapter/cooler), putting the total volume at ten quarts, only nine accessible.

One more observation, my 94 Gen 1, consistently took 10.5 quarts to hit the full level and that was only allowing a couple of minutes for draining the oil.

First I have a '97. Am I to assume that the 8 quarts specified in the owners manual is incorrect? I put in 8 quarts and I am still over a quart low on the dip stick. Is it possible that the dipstick is incorrect?

Thanks.
