Mr. Shifter Question

MY neighbor has a stock viper and wants to know how he can replace the shifter handle (to much wear on the numbers on top of shifter handle) He is kinda anal about all his stuff ( which is ok)But how does the shifter handle come off? Does it just screw off or is there a nut holding it on?
I told him you guys would help so dont let me down

Pull the skirt down and get 2 wrenches, 1 around the flat part of the shifter shaft and one of the bolt, and turn them simultaniously in different directions and it will come right off.

I think thats what you are talking aboot?

But wont it be hard to drive with no shifter?

Thanks for the help fellas! 1 more thing all he wants to do is replace the leather part not the entire shifter so my dumb question is this... Is the leather part "just" threaded onto the shift linkage and all he has to do is unthread it ? or does he have to loosten the nut to take the whole thing off just to replace the leather part of the shifter?
