You know how to get here, just take the gravel road till it turns into the dirt road, past the trailer park and turn left at the double wide.

Hey! I am a red neck and I find such comments to be offensive (but very true).

Gerald,
No VERY few races here but definitely more than your neck of the woods.

Chuck he he he GOOD suggestion.

Only problem is I have damaged eye sight and don't do well at night. I had Lasik surgery done and now at night EVERY light has a halo around it. I am still ok for night driving but probably not a good idea for high speed driving , over 120 MPH, at night unless there are not a lot of street lights, lighted signs, reflectors etc.

I am upholding the Viper image in these parts, just outside of Orlando. I KNOW there are a lot faster cars out there but so far nothing.

Ok question here for anyone. On a closed track how do you know when you win. The other day I got Wayyyyyy over 5 car lenghths on a Camaro and let off the gas. Well about 5 seconds later he passes me WOT.

What is your take on this?

Most closed tracks don't have accurate timing lights so you need to go by mph. Stock Vipers trap at around 118 mph, so once you've hit that you've run 1/4.

Often times they blow by after you shut down, just to save face. They'll come back with "why'd ya stop?" or "I thought we were running top end!"

When ever I pull 5 or 6 cars ahead I usually pull over to their lane just to stop the old wot pass after the race is over. Works well and feels like victory!

Now my understanding was that tracks like Sebring, VIR, Watkins Glen, etc. were "closed" tracks, because not everyone can participate, as opposed to "open" tracks where you can run into just about anyone

Each of which are distinct from street driving, of course

Re: My first \'encounter\' with a true competitior.

I have a VW GTI with a 1.8T. Its a pretty quick little car. It seems like everyone in town wants to race me in the VW.

Virtually no one will race against the Viper except the occasional Grand National. There is a highly modified 2001 Porsche TT that wants to race, but I'm a little hesitant due to his driving abilities and lack of judgement on the street.

In many smaller areas, when a new car arrives, it seems like there are a few test cases and if you do well then everyone kind of backs off.

Unfortunately, sometimes you can become the fastest gun in the west and everyone wants a run at you.

My first \'encounter\' with a true competitior.

Or so I thought.

I have put over 13,000 miles on my Viper. Always on the lookout for a spirited drive with a fellow auto driver, only to be disappointed time and time again when the 'race' failed to materialize.

Of course all of this is on a closed track.

I know a lot of you guys have people always willing to race. Well I have had VERY few opportunities even though I look for them all the time.

Infact, one time I drove 15 miles on a single lane coarse behind a Lamborgini Diablo waiting til we got to a 2 lane road and when the course opened up he would not race.

I had a nice go from zero against a Harley but as expected by the time I got into 3rd gear it was all over with the Viper triumphing.

I have made U-turns at traffic lights when a car going in the opposite direction revs their engine at me, only to have them turn chicken when they realize THE VIPER is right next to them.

Well finally today a Corvette wanted to play. I don't know what year, but it was the new body style. He comes up next to me while I was going about 45 and gives me a nod and points forward. I downshift into 2nd, he hits it and then I do. He has a half a car lead because of the early start he got. That was until I shift into 3rd and then it was all over. WAyyy before I hit red line in 3rd I had him by 5 lengths+.

Are Corvettes REALLY this slow? My car is BONE stock.

Either way it was fun to FINALLY get a run against a psuedo equal competitor.

I thought that the recognized signal was to tap your brakes a couple times after pulling a distinct lead to signify that you understood that you won, and the race was over.

The zooming past after the race is won is called the "ricer fly-by", and it is a well known face-saving technique of younger drivers.

As far as Corvettes being "slow" goes, they are faster than 95% of the cars out there.

Stock-to-stock the Viper is decidedly faster than the regular C5 Corvette (with equally skilled drivers). But in the real world, there are actually MANY more heavily modded Corvettes, F-Bodys, and Mustangs out there than there are Vipers, and they often look bone stock, but can run 10s and 9s in the 1/4 mile.

So you just might be very surprised next time, finding a real runner, and are better off not dismissing these cars as being slow.

-Dean.

Re: My first \'encounter\' with a true competitior.

Thanks for all the info everyone.

I called my friend who owns a 2002 C5 Corvette and who has driven my car. Some of you may remember me relaying the story how he drove my car and told me flat out he made a mistake buying the Corvette.

HE agrees C5s are slow YES they ARE slow when compared to my daily driver (Viper). You get it I said STOCK get it STOCK. I am NOT talking about add ons etc.

Unfortunately he lives 1400 miles away from me so we can't race.

Carl,

My thanks for the info. My eye sight is actually better than 20/20. My eyes also do not get dried out. My Lasik was done 2 years ago so my hope for better night vision is fading HA HA
