I'd do the filter/tube swap ASAP - don't worry the hissing sound is normal. As far as the exhaust, you have to just listen to the installed systems to get a feel for what YOU like. I've heard systems that supposedly were great (or great on other car makes) that didn't sound so hot to me on the Viper. It might be hard to get a good selection of examples in the land of cow tipping and the Causeway Classic (I was an Ag for 7 years), but take a trip to a Viper track event and ask around to listen to the various exhaust set ups before plunking down your cash.

Also, I have SEEN dyno sheets showing NO improvement in power with just a cat-back system, although the system supposedly was good for 10-15 hp. On the other hand, I have also seen dyno sheets where improvement was apparent, albeit as part of other mods made at the same time. So unless you really find a sound you like better than the stock system (which some people just don't like), I'd hold on to my cash until I was sure about the purchase.

Jeff,

Welcome to the viper family! You have lots of choices when it comes to an exhaust system. 2 years ago I made mine based upon research, sound quality and performance. Since then I have become THE spokesperson for Belangers exhaust and their largest distributor in the U.S.

The product is simply the best. The best fit, finish, sound, and I personally guarantee performance! Not to mention that our pricing is at an all time low.(see our latest summer sales info in the supplier forum of this message board)

Keep in mind that the exhaust system is the platform for ALL future mods that you may perform over the life of your car. Make a poor choice with regards to performance and you will hinder the performance all future mods and money that you may spend.

As for air filters, there is lots to choose from here as well. I have found that NO filters(only recommended for racing) nets the most power with a stock airbox. K&Ns in the stock airbox netted 3 hp over stock, no filters netted 5hp over stock. Smooth tubes are worth another 2-5 hp. Our cone filter system will net a total of 10hp and 10 ft/lbs toruqe.....again its up to you as choices are abundent from a simple filter change to a carbon fibre airbox that will set you back a G note or more.

As for break in, with 1000 miles ITS BROKE IN.

Feel free to check out some dyno results, drag strip time slips, and video clips at my website at the link below.

Every product we offer has been tested on my own Vipers.

Thanks again, welcome......and good luck with your search.

Hi Jeff,

At the Monterey Western Zone (June 23/24) event you will see and hear cars with many exhaust options Headers from Edelbrock, Belanger, TNT, HMS, Caldwell, can cat-backs from some of the above Borla, as well as various custom cat-back with tunable mufflers etc. Sound is a very individual attribute or annoyance depending on you ear and the understanding of your mate. Other Mods (cam variations, etc) will add or take from the sound quality or lack-of. I know a couple tuners will also be there (Dan Cragin Southern CA, Ted May Northern CA, ??).
