New VCA Classifieds \"Opening Soon\"

The new VCA Classifieds will be opening soon (in the next couple of weeks). Well, actually, all advertisers currently placing ads in the existing classifieds are also being asked to be place their ads in the new classifieds as well.

If you have an ad on the current classifieds, please take the time to visit the new classifieds at:

http://12.41.224.36/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi

to register and place your ad.

Registration is simple, just do the following:

1) Click on the "Place ad" or "My Profile" link
2) In the "User Logon" Box, click the:
"New Users: Please Register For An Account" link
3) Fill in all the requested info (please enter the city as well, even though it is not red-starred, it is a required field)
4) submit the filled out form

It's that easy. Once registered, you'll be able to place your ad.

The new classifieds are fully searchable, highly featured and very user friendly. Advertisers can place their own ad, set ad duration, make changes to the ad, and even upload a image of the item for sale. All these features are usable in any standard Web Browser.

Their are still a few minor bugs, but nothing that will prevent us from "opening up the shop" for business. Let us know what you think, suggestions are always welcome. A special thanks goes out to the beta testers who placed many test ads, and found hundreds of "fo-pa's".

Looking good, Jay. As you know, I particularly like the auto notify feature.

One observation, though. If, for example, I go to "Viper Parts Wanted" section the Browse Ads button and the All Categories button do the same thing---they show all 40 ads in the system.

It would make more sense for the small Browse Ads button to browse all 40 ads but the All Categories is positioned to really be an "all sub categories" button that would show all of the sub categories (parts, interior, wheels, accessories) in the wanted section. That would allow an overall look at all of the sub-categories in the wanted section without having to check each one independently.

Re: New VCA Classifieds \"Opening Soon\"

That is definitely on the to-do list, but after playing around a bit, I found out how the original program accomplishes the same thing (but it is not easily noticable):

When you get in the Sub-category of your liking, "Viper Parts Wanted" in your example.......

click on "Viper Parts Wanted" Link (in blue, just above the menu bar) and all the ads for the sub category will appear. That's what you were looking for, right?

It is not intuitive as placing a "View all ads in the Viper parts wanted section" would be, but at least the functionality is there. Hopefully, we'll get the "Common Sense" interface method in soon.

Nothing to do with the classifieds or the new server it is sitting on. This message is a UBB server problem that we should be out of pretty soon. If you hit "back" and then retry, you will more than likely get thorugh. I am talking to the hosting service daily as a short term fix, but ultimately, going away from them completely is going to be the solution.

The Classifieds server is working fine, I was bopping in and out of it while you were typing your message

Re: New VCA Classifieds \"Opening Soon\"

Jay,
Just a quick question for you on the classified section, Do you intend to have some sort of "rating" system for those who place ads, or the buyers, sort of like ebay does? I had a bad experience not long ago with one of the ads placed in the classified section. Luckily, I did not loose any money in the deal, but I'll e-mail you more information later on what transpired. It is scary some times to try and buy something sight unseen from a private party that you don't know from Adam. You sends your money, and you takes your chances, as the saying goes, but it sure would make for a warmer fuzzy feeling if there were some sort of rating system in place when trying to purchase some Viper parts.

We did not have that in the plans, but it is certainly a good suggestion. In the past, we've been asked to do the same thing to "rate" Tuners and Viper Parts Suppliers

I look forward to your email on the bad experience, gotta wonder if his name was Mohammed Mohammed. This is general problem for all forms of classifieds, and more prevalent with Magazine and Web advertising because of the large distances between buyer and seller. I Escrow.com is one way to deal with the situation, using local regional VCA members to check out a seller/actually make the transaction is another that I use often.
