Okay, here is my plan to avoid the annoying NJ inspection and emission hassle. Have the Viper registered as a "Collector Vehicle". As I do not drive more than 3K per year this will not be a problem. My insurance limits me to 3,500 miles anyway. ;)

Vehicles Exempt from Inspection

Inspections are not required for certain vehicles, such as historic and collector cars.

To be designated as a "historic vehicle," the owner must ensure that the vehicle

o is at least 25 years old,
o is used only for exhibition purposes or was manufactured before 1945,
o has a special registration and a QQ plate displayed on the rear of the vehicle.

For a vehicle to be designated as a "collector vehicle," the owner must apply* at the time of registration or renewal for this designation and must provide evidence that the vehicle

o is not registered as a "historic vehicle," under N.J.S.A. 39:3-27.3 et seq., or a "street rod," under N.J.S.A. 39:3-27.27,

o is not driven more than 3,000 miles per year,

o is insured as a limited use "collector vehicle." (Proof must be supplied at time of odometer verification.)

For inspection-exempt status, the vehicle must be taken to a state inspection station for odometer and insurance verification.

Visit the exit end of the inspection station.
Ask the inspector to verify the odometer reading of the "collector vehicle"; MVC may require that the vehicle be equipped with an odometer lock.
Pay fee ($25 and $10 per renewal) for the special decal which indicates that the vehicle is exempt from safety and emission inspection.
*Call MVC at 609.292.6500 or (toll-free in NJ) 888.486.3339 for an application. Submit the completed application to any MVC agency or by mail to

Hmmnnn sounds good...even though I get a 2 year sticker for $75 this may be a better deal still...

So basically, to get things started is to visit state inspection when your car is due ? Or do you get the application first?

Frank,

You get the form at DMV, fill it out, pay the fee, show them that you have collector or limited use insurance. DMV gives you the new registration indicating the car has collector status. You then go to the end of the line at the inspection station with the new registration, the inspection guy confirms your insurance and puts a new triangular shaped Inspection sticker on which indicates you are now exempt from Inspection and emission testing.

Do they check for a FRONT plate? I don't have mine mounted and I don't even know where the heck it is!!

My sticker doesn't run out until June of 2004...so I have plenty of time still...

Technically no, since the car is exempt from inspection. I have not obtained "collector" status on my GTS yet. I have it on my 78 Trans AM so I am familiar with the process. I plan on trying it with the GTS, so I will let you know soon.

I hear ya...I've had my Viper for over four years and put on @ 2,000 miles in that time. I have a few other cars and have a hard time driving them all...plus working two jobs makes finding time hard... :(

Wow that means that I can only drive my car for one month. That would never work for me. Also "Bandit400" who is your insurance provider? I have a friend that had the same problem. My insurance allows me to drive it all the time. No limit has been imposed. They were all confused when I had asked them about it.
