I am thinking about changing my oil in the garage on jack stands instead of taking it out to get it done. The drain plug is in the middle of the pan so it looks like I won't get a complete drain on jack stands with the front end up. Any tricks to get a complete drain on jack stands?

I agree. The car should be level to get it all out

For $10 bucks, I pay for a rack, the guy takes off the filter (the messiest part), and I do the rest. He takes care of the old oil. Works pretty good. 20 minutes -- done.........plus I get to check out everything under the car while standing up.

I just jack up the corner and let it back down to finish draining. Use the jack stand for safety of course when you are under it. It takes a low profile pan and I have to drain the pan twice because it does not hold 10 quarts.

There are factory jack spots in the form of U shaped or V shaped points on both sides. You can also jack on the actual frame if you can get to it with your jack. Remember to use a small peice of wood or pad on the jack to preent damage to the sill area.;)

The drain plug is on the front-lower passenger side of the oil pan. To do the oil I merely jack the car up on the front jack points by the front wheels (at the end of the sidesill, looks like someone welded a link of 6 Gauge chain to the frame) and put about 5 2"thick boards underneath the drivers side front tire and 3 boards under the passenger front tire. I keep the jack in place "just in case." I let her drain for about 30 mins then fill. Full for me is just a hair under 9quarts.

What brand of oil filter are you using?

I decided to go with a Mobil 1 M1-204 on sale for $8.88. I have used the std. Mopars in the past and considered the new Mopar filter, but locally it is a PITA to get one. The Mobil 1 is available at Advance Auto and Mobil 1 10W30 is on sales for $17.88 for a gallon.

Try Wal-Mart for Mobil 1, they have the best prices and carry the 5 quart jugs (not the 4 quart ones like Advance sells). They had 5 quart jugs on sale for 19.44 a couple weekends ago, so I stocked up. They typically run 21-22 bucks. Which is still cheaper than Advance per quart. They also have Mobil 1 filters (the filters I use) for 9 bucks. My local wal mart also carries Mopar fluids and some filters, which I always though was strange.

Just a note on the filters you choose. The Mobil filter does a good job of filtering down to a small micron, BUT it also has more of a tendancy to bypass on startup when the engine needs the filtering and will plg sooner and continue to bypass which is not a good thing. We have checked on filters extensively and if you do not want or cannot get a new Mopar Viper filter call me and I will get you some. They are worth it in the long run or another senario would be to try the Napa GOLD filter it s also made very well and has a well thought out bypass system. Good luck.

Here's how I do my oil changes--I jack up the front of the car, put the jackstand under it, remove the filter, let the oil drain out. Remove the drain plug and let drain until it slows down. Remove jack stand, lower car (while leaving pan under car), go in, have lunch while ALL the oil drains. Go back out, jack car back up, put jackstand back in place, put new filter on, put drain plug back and lower car. Put new oil in, crank up, look under car for leaks...done :)
