I've always stuck with the OEM product. Mobil 1 10w-30 fully synthetic for your GEN III.

We have also generally stuck with factory fills. However, all years of our Vipers are in the process of being switched to Mobil 1's 0W-40...which first appeared in 2005 as the factory fill for Vipers. You will find that the Zinc & Phosphorus levels are higher (that's good) in Mobil 1's 0W-40, 15W-50, and their diesel oils than in their 5W-20, 5W-30, and 10W-30.

There are almost limitless numbers of threads on this subject...filled with facts, emotions, and some BS.

Many of us test a sample from every oil change done on our Vipers...and have done so for many years (10 in my case)...regardless of time between oil changes or mileage. I have also sent in ****** samples of the various oils used in order to establish a baseline for comparison.

Blackstone Labs in Fort Wayne, IN

blackstone-labs.com

is my preferred lab...offering timely reporting and insightful commentary on our Vipers. By now, I would say they have an indepth profile of Vipers...Gen I thru IV...using various Mobil 1 products...from street driven daily drivers to garage queens to Vipers that are track driven. There are data on short interval oil changes, extended interval changes (1,2,4 years !!!)...with mileage varying between 9 and 5000 miles. These reports cover our own Vipers as well as about a dozen others.

Combine the above reports with recommendations from Tom F&L,GoR AND from Team Viper/SRT with one's own driving patterns and you have a plan.

For specific needs, uses, etc...many experiment with a plethra of other products...and, will undoubtedly "chime in" !!

I tried to search for those topics, but i keep getting nothing found.

Anyways I had been using the Mobil 0w-30 because no one carries the 0w-40 (that it believe others are running). But I just found the 0w-20 & for some reason it's priced below the 0w-30.

My Dad is probably turning in his grave! He was a petro-chemical engineer for Mobil and he would say you are throwing out good oil! He chided me for changing at 6000 miles and said it would last for 20,000 miles - just change the filters. He had tests to prove it. I just thought it was BS but 4000 miles on 10 quarts is pretty quick. Does it even get a tinge of discolor? Of course, oil is cheaper than engines!

I just bought a Honda that says, 10,000 miles or once a year. I laughed, guess i'm still old school at the 3,000 miles.

15w50 Mobil1 or Amsoil 20w50 ... both have higher ZDDP levels. The 15w50 Mobil1 can be had in 5qt jugs at Wally World on sale for about $24.. I also use the Amsoil full synthetic oil filters which produce better oil pressure and have proven to filter very well.

I've been told by a couple different engine builders that those oils are appropriate.

No ticking or noises when hot and better oil pressure when hot as well. That 0w stuff just doesn't work for me.
