I have an 08 and have had all my oil changes at "my" dodge dealership. When I first got the car a year ago the oil filter had SRT on it. The one they replace it with doesn't. Is that a problem? Or is it OK?

I'm not sure if it is a problem but if the part # does not end with 8041 then it is not the correct filter. Not all dealers stock the Gen IV oil filter so they use what fits when they need it immediately.
One known difference in the Gen IV Viper SRT filter is its strength. It can withstand the high oil pressure (~100+ psi) put out of the Gen IV oil pump at cold start without bursting.

The correct filter (P/N 05038041AA) should be white and should have "SRT" written on it (Gen. IV cars). Gen. II and Gen. III use (or should use) the white filter with "Viper" written on it (P/N 05037836AA). The difference between the two filters is the threads. Make sure they are using the recommended filter (white filter with "SRT", P/N 05038041AA). As was mentioned previously, they simply grabbed a "compatible" yet available Mopar filter without considering the one that is designed for the Viper engine. No harm as far as damage etc. but you should replace it with the correct one. If they don't normally stock this filter, simply purchase one or a couple from this site (VPA) along with 11 quarts of oil and have them (or someone else) simply perform the labor (or do it yourself). You'll save a few bucks in the process.

Thanks guys. My factory filter was white with SRT on it. The new one is black. I believe it says mopar on it. I would look but the car is at the dealership right now.

Just got a new Gen III filter from Dodge, it is P/N 05037836AB. Looks like there was a change made? The last digit changing means they are likely tracking some information pertaining to the new part number.

Looks like they took the easy way out by not ordering the proper filter and installed the general black Mopar filter instead. If I were you, I would like hear the explanation of why they decided to use "substitute" when the one they removed (the stock filter) is obviously different and is designed for the Viper for a specifc reason.

We always carry them but it is surprising Dealers still don't have the SRT designated filter in stock, as it is not only recommended for Gen IV Vipers, it is also for the SRT8s - hence the reason it was changed from listing Viper on the filter to SRT.

This is interesting. My dealer uses the same 5281090BA (part number on the receipt) on both my 03 Viper and my 07 SRT8. What up with that?

I would say that IF the number on your receipt IS NOT a typo...in my opinion, you have under-informed/under-performing folks working on your Viper...who are out of the Viper mainstream.

ALL the more reason to have a few "Centers of Excellence" for Viper Service using properly trained and updated Techs !!!

Or better yet....... save the dealership "ViperTax" on the filter and oil by purchasing those items yourself and bring them with you for your next oil change. Have them charge you only for the labor.

Not a typo. Been using these folks for years, and the service manage himself owns an SRT Ram. As I mentioned, same filter on bothe SRT8 and the Viper, combined which I have put 1000s of miles on. I did a google search on that number, and it appears that that was an OEM number for the SRT truck, which of course is my same 8.3. Seems to have many Mopar applications however.
