does a custom paint job hurt the value allot? car is red, kinda common

Well, if your planning on keeping the car, it shouldnt matter. If you plan to sell the car later down the line, then it will be up to the new buyer whether or not it hurts the value. Just my $.02 cents.

REDSNAKE, I do like red but the cops like it more! Besides somebody prior repainted and it has some flaws, besides purple would be really cool on my car

i think someone here has a purple '94. there was one on ebay not too long ago
i dont know much how it would hurt the value, but you would certainly limit your prospective buyers when you were ready...

I should add that I don't plan on sellin' this car ever a viper can't get boring, you just keep moddin' it always a changing project!

I considered whether or not to repaint my Viper, and I decided to do it. If you pick a likable color then it shouldn't effect the value too much outside of the fact that some people will suspect that your repaint was to cover an accident.
Just make sure that if you choose a wild color, that you see what the paint looks like on a real car first. Photochromic (color-shifting) paints and certain pearls can look awkward sometimes, colors like champagne can look pink, and neon/bright colors can look cheap.
But a cool color can make the Viper look even MORE unique and interesting.

My Viper was repainted by the previous owner due to the usual wear of the original paint. Kept color close to stock, a little deeper red though. Just about everyone says it looks better. I doubt it will do anything but help the car's value.

I wanted a 2001 Viper, so I just painted my 1997 Sapphire! Actually, just loved the color and was tired of red. I say do it, you can almost always prove no accidents by Car Fax and a good Viper Tech check.

Dean, my wife does bodywork right in my backyard! so I know what you mean by looking right on the right car, the 34 ply. coupe we sold has the same scheme and it looks really cool. 
p.s. there definately WILL NOT be any dolphins!

IMO if your car was custom painted you can expect to knock off about 6% - 8% from your selling price. Too many buyer don't want to deal with a "story" about why the car was repainted. 9 times out of 10, a car get repainted because it was damanged, people don't believe you otherwise. In general it is not smart to do unless the car is so old that the paint is fading... (like a classic).

Trust me its not the colour - its the 200mph / I make $300k a year image that gets tacked to the car that will get you pulled over quicker - beit purple, red, or rustoleum.
If you're keeping the car do what you like, BUT, be sure its done right the first time.

Its the *******-street racer image, not the colour. (read: even the graphite guys get pulled over regualarly.)

My viper is Red as well as 850 RWHP and never been stopped by the police??? Just alot of thumbs up!
