Re: Pesky driver\'s side door lock

Have the same problem with my 97 GTS. The button doesn't activate, like it's not getting any power. I checked the wires for shorts and still haven't found anything.

Let me know what you find out.

You might need to replace the door lock motor.I had the same problem not too long ago.

Re: Pesky driver\'s side door lock

I had to have my passenger side door lock solenoid replaced for a similar reason. It would not always unlock when the drivers side door was opened, but if it was shut, it would unlock OK. I was also getting an occasional false alarm. Replacing the solenoid (motor?) fixed both problems.

Re: Pesky driver\'s side door lock

Old Rascal and Chuck, I believe that the problem that you both having is a failed outside door knob microswitch. We have some experience as it failed on oue of our '96 coupes.

The symptoms that you are having seem to match ours. Everything works fine except the outside door handle won't work. If the inside door handle works then it is not the door solenoid.

Let me explain further. Both the inside and outside latches on Gan II's are not mechanically connected to the actual door latch. Only the emergency release at the upper inside of the door pillar is mechanically connected to the door latch. Both latches just activate microswitches that actuate a solenoid. On our car replacing the mimcroswitch fixed the problem completely.

Out tech had to search quite a bit to find the right part (it took a couple of tries). I may have some paperwork somewhere that has the P/N on it but I bet JonB can find it faster...

I concur w/ Henry........ Outer "Door Handle Switch" is probably the culprit. The next likely candidate is the actual wire harness that runs between the body and the door, in the hinge area. They COMMONLY deteriorate w/ heavier use, but your low-mile beast makes this unlikley.

The LEDs staying ON means you have an open alarm circuit. Since your hood was just OFF, I suspect the hood alarmswitch at the side of the RF hinge. You can easily test this manually, and adjust it manually

COMMERCIAL MESSAGE: That switch is a $129 dealer item...about $99 from PartsRack.

Re: Pesky driver\'s side door lock

There's not enough info to accuratly diagnose so I'll accuratly give you something to look for. Open the door all the way. Locate the ribbed rubber wiring loom cover in the door jamb. The door harness runs through this cover. Carefully pull each end, one at a time of course, to dissconnect the covering from the door and the body. "Should" just snap out. Be sure to grasp it as close to the end as possible to avoid tearing the rubber. You wouldn't want that. Once it's loose you can inspect the wiring for any open circuits at this point. Slide the cover to one end or the other. Look for split wires. Hold one end of the harness while gently pulling on a (1) wire on the oposite end. I've had a handfull of gen 2 cars that split the wires in this exact area and have had the same symptoms as your car. The wire don't rub against anything, I believe the harness is just run a bit too tight in this area. One guy's car came back 2 times. Each time was about 3-4 months apart. 1st-outer handle inop. 2nd-inner inop. I'm not saying it's the fix, but it's something YOU can check out by just spending a little time. dj
