I had the 998 recall/fix done last week. For NE Ohio owners, Ganley Dodge in Wickcliffe did a very nice job. I was the third or fourth he did. The only problem was the service manager wanted to order the parts after they tore it down. That would have added a couple of days to the project. Force the issue and have them order the parts prior to bringing the car in. The parts are approximately $550. This specific viper tech has taken 11 hours on each one he has done.

The front support bracket is air chiseled off and a larger riveted bracket is attached in two locations to the front frame where the steering bracket is positioned. That is the first picture.

I encountered two problems with after market enhancements. One is the Unitrax half-shaft loops and the other is the Archer anti-toe brackets. I have a fix for the half-shaft brackets. The anti-toe bracket is a little more complex and I am working on that.

The anti-toe bracket and the half-shaft bracket will fit on the passenger side. The problem side for both is the drivers side. The 998 recall adds an upright that attaches to the lower frame member and to the rear-end upper arm mounting bolt/bushing. That new upright interferes with both the anti-toe and half-shaft bracket.

The solution with the half-shaft loop is to cut the outside of the bracket to clear the 998 member. The bracket (outboard side of the U) must be cut so that the top dimension is 4.5" from front to back; the bottom dimension is 3.5" from from to back. In other words, when looking from the outside of the car, the top of the bracket is longer on the top than the bottom. After the cuting and finishing, two 9/16" holes must be drilled for the new mounting holes.

This may be a dumb question, but why does one need a Unitrax half-shaft loop after having a 998 recall done on a Viper? Does not the 998 recall take care of the problem? What am I missing? I don't have this in any of my notes, so I need to know for the sake of future Vipers I will own. Thanks.

Jack, thanks for the pics and info / solution of your findings. I too have the Unitrax loops, but I'm still waiting for the recall work! (That front frame recall work will affect my Roe front duct kit also I think, but looks like it can easily be worked around).

Daffy, the Unitrax driveshaft loops are a safety measure best for uprated powered snakes or running slicks. The driveshafts are good for about 600 bhp, they basically catch and contain the driveshaft in the nasty event if it should brake, and restrict it thrashing around, doing lots of damage!

Ohhhh, okay. I am actually familiar with the need for such precautions. I just did not make the proper connection between "half-shaft" and "driveshaft". Thanks for explaining. Certainly a wise thing to have for a Viper.

Nadine:

I also have the Roe air duct/belly pan, it does not interfere with the recall. I just have not put the belly pan back on after the recall work.
