Poor Man\'s Exhaust System

I want more noise! In an effort to improve/increase sound, I will have the following modifications performed soon:

* Install Random Tech high-flow cats
* Remove stock resonators and replace with "race mufflers" (round and skinny)
* Install 3 inch piping from high-flow cats to the race mufflers and from the race mufflers to the X-pipe portrayed in the following link:

My goal is to improve the sound without purchasing a brand name cat-back system. Has anyone tried this or a similar approach?

Ya, real tough to bend some 3" pipe   . I am sure if you build it, the cost will still be around $500, but you have saved about half the cost. Good luck :2tu: :2tu:

P.S. I don't know why some systems drone and other don't(my TNT system doesn't), but I would try it, if that is what you want to do.

Yes, I did the same thing for my "96 GTS, buying the stainless steel 3" tubing from J.C. Whitney, including the prebent "L's". I used Roe cats with Borla mufflers I got from Summit. This combination cost less than $700 and greatly inhanced the power and the sound of my exhaust. It sounds pretty healthy, even with the bullet glasspack on the rear, in place of the factory muffler. I wrapped the pipes for heat reduction. I wish I had gotten 3" flex pipes to run from the exhaust header to the exhaust pipes.

Nice cheap setup Gary.

I ran 2000 headers, Roe Ovals in three inch, dropped the rear muffler with an X pipe and had then enitire system jet hot coated cats and all from header to rear muffler.

Sounds awesome, just were I wanted it volume wise. Will dyno to see what happened overall.

V10 sound is always unique but that's working with what we have to improve it.

Post any dyno gains and I'll do the same.

Re: Poor Man\'s Exhaust System

Gar,
My yellow brother, i have been there done that with the exhaust.
I had the sub strate random techs ($500) and a B&B catback.
loud is good too loud is bad.
the above setup was just too loud with the top off. IMHO

I would call Mike Adams and get a sweet deal on a B&B catback.
Not too much more than your makeshift exhaust.
Try it, then if not loud enough start swapping out cats.
Just my 2 cent, less headache and with the Canadain exchange rate not too expensive.
Keep us posted
Jim

Im curious as to how that works out. I need to replace the corsa cans in the back with something. My car is so low that the mufflers bottom out. DOH!

Re: Poor Man\'s Exhaust System

I have the system in my signature in transit right now. Should be installed next week, and I will post feedback ASAP....

I am going:
Belager headers -> RandomTech Cats -> RandomTech Cat-back (no mufflers) -> X-pipe -> Tips

Re: Poor Man\'s Exhaust System

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the feedback. I may install a brand name system one day but I want to give this "discount" method a try. Does anyone know if my plans (RE: 3-inch pipes throughout the setup) will result in the loss of back pressure?

Do you plan on using mandrel bent tubing?
For the maximum performance you should.

I believe your system will help to reduce the back pressure, garolittle is correct, get some nice clean bends in the system!
