Installed 3" Ceramic Hi-Flows and Corsa Cat-back on a cream puff.....Gurgling, popping(backfire?) every time throttle is lifted(noise not an issue). Several other posts have mentioned this also, but here's the question......Is it raw fuel traveling through the exhaust, and therefore harming the Cats? Why would this occur on a computer controlled motor?? Thanks for any help you folks can give.

As far as I know, nothing changes except that you can't hear the pooping noise with the stock exhaust. It shouldn't harm a thing. It happens on any motor, even hondas with the coffecanfartexhaust.

I had one of my wire's wiggle loose due to my installation. I sodered them and now it works great. I am sure your installation is fine. My car would not run when the wire had wiggled loose.

I am set at ~+5 low and ~-14 high.

I found that if it's REALLY loud popping, like backfires, it's probably an exhaust leak. You may not even be able to hear the leak, but if you put it on a lift, and feel around all of the joints, you might find one. It let's cold air into the system when you decellerate and causes the popping. Some popping is normal, but if it's excessive, you may have a leak.

What are you talking about?? That's the good stuff!

I'm not happy with a car until it pops and crackles all crazy on throttle lifts and up shifts.

Can't beat the sound when it's really cold either. :)

I don't know if you understand just how loud it pops. I too like crackling and popping, but mine with the exhaust leak is LOUD! It honestly sounds like you're shooting a gun out the window. It scares people! lol

I'm not sure if tuning, to get the popping out, is the best approach
for everyone. Some popping is inherit with the Viper, tune for a good
overall A/F reading and accept the popping as a gift or nuisance.

Lean running causes overheating and popping, as the combustion is slower
or happens later (one of the two ...) causing the explosion to occur later
in the cycle, so there's more heat sent down the exhaust. It can also cause
missfiring, because there's not enough fuel to burn sometimes (depending on
how lean it is).

Popping happens when you close the throttle, causing the engine to suddenly
run very rich, as the engine is still sucking, but you're not letting it get
enough air.

A wet charge gets into the exhaust, where it finds lovely hot metal, and
lots of air .. *bang*. this is especially pronounced in a very free-breathing
exhaust. It's also more obvious in race tuned engines, as they run richer, as
ideal power mix is about 17% (from memory) more than ideal economy.

If you listen to a modern turbo rallycar, you'll hear an enhanced version of
this being used to keep the turbo spinning.

Early carburetted cars, to meet ADR27A, have a "dash ***" which is a vacuum
activated servo attached to the throttle that keeps it open, allowing more air
in, when the throttle is closed off by the accelerator, but high manifold vacuum is still sucking in lots of fuel. Less relevant with fuel injection systems, of course. Or something.

Thanks for all the input, my main concern is that I'm not damaging my new converters by driving it. The sound is quite enjoyable.

you are not damaging anything. Sometimes I rev it up to redline in 1st gear and let off the gas.

"pop pop pu pop pop poooo po vrmmmmmm. pop."

Thats the main reason I did cats, headers and corsa.

I must agree, I too LOVE the popping...and some of the info in this thread confirms its a sign of the beast that is
under our hoods, being tuned for performance!!

When I added the HF cats and Corsa, it got even better!!

Now I can't wait till the drive home

A minor correction, a stock viper runs very lean when under load. Take a look at any dyno pull and associated a/f graph. The viper will run 13.5-14.0 between 3000 and 5000 rpm.

Old thread, but I am having this issue with the new stroked 94 RT/10. On my old 94 (RedSled's old car) I added 3" Hi flow cats and it had Borla exhaust and it sounded great when it gurgled and popped lightly. On this new car, doing the same thing cause loud gun shot like pops that not only startle me, but fer shure must scare the crap out of humans and animals within the vicinity.

Another thing I noticed is a slight smell of fuel as I drive. I was assured there was no gas leaks by the Viper shop, so is the car running too rich and is that causing the backfires as well?

I love the grumble/gurgle/snapping sound, but loud gunshot sounds will not do. How do I fix?

Superbar - If the popping is that loud and you're smelling the hint of fuel, it might be worth checking the plug wires and the the hassle of checking the plugs themselves. Also, is the loud shotgun seem to be from just one side since you have side exhaust? Just a thought.

Superbar, Sapp's explaination was perfect...he actually answered the very same question for me. You mention a big snap, like a gunshot. I can replicate the same noise with mine...but I have to lay off the throttle at high RPM's (I mean over 3000). If I drive by a place where I don't want to make noise I just push in the clutch. Otherwise no problems. I actually think it is very cool to have a loaded shotgun (sound) that I can fire at will. :D

Mine starts the blasting at almost exactly 2000 rpms. Anything over that, or under 1500 sounds great!
