Since my car is Black and beautiful I wanted to keep that way. Being that black is one of the toughest colors to take car of I purchased a Porter Cable Polisher model 7428. It came with a 7" Hook & Loop back up pad. However I noticed from several websites that 6" seems to be the most common sizes of foam applicator and polishing pads. I wouls like to convert it to 6". I assume all I have to is take off this back up pad and install a 6" one. The thread size is 5/8". Woulds this be a common size for back up pads..thread wise to convert.

Also any suggestions on which pads to purchase for specific jobs..wax application, removal..etc...

Thanks Adam

Adam,

Throw all pads away that came with the buffer...

Velcro Pad Holder

Get a couple of the Black Polishing, and the White Finishing Foam Pads

1. Use the Black Pads for polishing with a swirl remover or a fine cut rubbing compound liquid, (remove swirls at 6000 rpms on the Porter Cable)

2. Use the white pads to achieve an insane shine after you wax your RT, at about 3000 rpms on the Porter Cable...

For swirl removal on your RT, I'd recommend:

3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound Liquid (PN 39002)...followed by...3M Foam Polishing Pad Glaze (PN 05996)...work on 2ft x 2ft areas...

Post a smooth pic when you are swirl free!!!

So the white pads are for applying wax only. Don't remove wax with polisher, only with micro fiber towels. Is that correct? What about zaino products? not mean't for use with polishers?

1. The white pads are the softest thing on the planet...so just use them to apply wax...

2. YES! Use MicroFiber's to remove the wax...not the buffer

3. The black pads are harder than the white ones, which is why they are for polishing...To remove a swirl/scratch you need two things: Heat and abrasive...The pad creates the heat, and the 3M stuff is the abrasive...the white pads are too soft to create enough heat to remove swirls/scratches...

4. I only use Zaino Z6...I use Pinnacle waxes/glazes, or Meguires No. 7 Show Car Glaze on my black RT...with Z6 in between each coat, and as a quick detailer...

Side Note: Abrasive is not dirty word...The 3M products have microscopic glass beads in the liquid, and as you buff, they break down even further...That is all it means, the material in a compound that does the "work"...

Be careful about applying wax over a freshly painted surface. You may want to check with the body shop first. Many automotive paints require a curing process that wax can inhibit.
