found a new power steering pump on ebay not to long ago and bought it to replace mine that was showing a few signs of wear. here's the auction:

LINKY

anyhow, got it a few days ago and installed it today while I was messing with the car. when I put the belt on it became painfully clear that this pump/pulley sticks out farther from the block than my old one. I started the car just to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me and sure enough it starts to work its way off the back of the pulley.

so...when did they change? is it just a difference in the pulley or are the pumps incompatible?

well, after some research, it appears that the pumps changed in '96, so there are different pumps for genI & II...

Interesting to know. The ad says it will fit 93-02. You should be able to get your money back. If not I might be interested.

yeah, I emailed the guy, we'll see what he says. I kinda blame myself for being an idiot and not researching it better. If I had some machine tools I'd mill it down and make it fit, the offset is not that much.

good thing is my steering feels much better, so I'm pretty sure I need the new pump...

I though my pump was failing too, but when my PS pulley exploded in front of me, I found the real probelm. Very common for the pulley to let loose.

well, according to chuck I should be able to swap pulleys...

Hey Ben,
After we got off the phone, I looked at the pics from e-bay and it is a GENII pulley on that pump. Change them over and you should be good to go.

Well, just like Chuck said, the pumps are exactly the same and all I had to do was swap the pulleys.

Thanks again Chuck.

Yea, I've been through this. I had trouble when I put on underdrive pulleys. Dodge changed the power steering mount and the pulley at the same time. This left the geometry the same, but gives you and me headaches. Changing the pulley or going with the thinner mount will get you lined up again. Like it says above, I'd change to the GEN1 steel pulley.

Here is another hint. The power steering pump from the Grand Cherokee is the same as the pump on some Vipers and there's no Viper tax.
