Like many of you I watch the going prices of Vipers both here and on ebay.

Do these prices seem low to you?

1996 GTS Blue with white strips. 13K miles.
NO BIDS in the 9 days it has been up for auction. Starting price is 48K http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1833430610

1999 Black GTS with 12K miles buy it now price of 55K
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1834330877

1999 Silver GTS/ACR. This is a different one than the other thread.
Buy it now price of $60,000 with 18000 miles. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1833951796

Would you buy a Viper sight unseen off EBAY? I wouldn't. I don't feel EBAY transaction prices are representative of the overall average transaction price of used Vipers. It appears to me that EBAY cars tend to be a bit more "used" than most.

Of course, it still could be an indication of a trend over time.....

The best deals I have witnessed on Ebay was a red 1998 R/T with 7500K go for $45,100 (no hard top) and a Silver 1999 R/T with 34k go for $45,200, but with a TNT upgrade(hard top). I wish I had cash at the time for both.

Mike

P.S. it is not bad to go through Ebay, just make sure the car is as represented(check it out!)

My research is comparing the cars I have seen sold on ebay.

Thank you for the warning Ron I believe in most situations you would be right to be cautious.

Believe it or not, I saw a 2000 RT/10 on ebay came back to this board and asked if anyone knew about it. Well the Viper tech that serviced it emailed me. He gave me the info on it, I contacted the seller, sent him $54,000 cash through Pay Pal, flew to TX picked it up and here I am a VOA member and 6000 miles later happy as a clam.

I dont think those prices are low at all really.

In September of last year I was seriously checking prices on silver 1998 GTS's and what I heard was "low miles, perfect shape, they can go mid-high 50's".

Considering this is almost a year later it seems like those prices are actually a tad high - especially the 96 GTS which I would expect to be more like low 40's but probably a starting price of very low 40's or even in the 30's. $48k as a starting bid just seems high.

As for the '99, I wouldn't pay $55k for that car w/those miles... I have seen '01's go for high (very high) 50's and '02's for low 60's, so that price seems a tad high.

The ACR seems pretty reasonable, but in my experience the ACR package isn't worth nearly as much on resale as it is when you buy it. I think there was a '99 ACR on the classifieds here recently for $55k with a full exhaust/headers and big brake kit.. it was on there for a while and I know a guy who called on it and the seller was very flexible.

Just sold my mint-ish (5500 miles, both tops, smoothies, K&Ns, MGW goodies, 7yr/75k miles DC extended warranty) 2000 RT/10 for $58k. Would've certainly held out for more $$$ but my '02 final ed was en route. Believe the buyer of my car got a good deal and I got the same from John Gastman at Roanoke on the new GTS.....and yes, I am loving it! Back to the garage as its now Zaino time.

Thanks for the info. If you EVER see those kinds of prices again PLEASE post them or PM/email me. The prices you quoted are VERY low.

That '99 ACR from the classifieds here, has over 3 times the miles on it than the '99 you said you would not buy because the milage was so high. That is why it was priced at 55K

If you think a Blue and white '96 and '97s hold their value much better than other cars of the same year. If you do find a good quality one in the high 30s or low 40s I will give you a $100 finders fee.

Thanks again Mike.

Although I buy and sell quite a bit of lower cost stuff on EBAY, buying cars there always scared me. You have the the difficulty of verifying the true history and condition of the car compounded by the pressure of the deadline and the speed with which payment is expected. This forces you to take an expensive potential cross country trip quickly or worse, rely on the sellers description.

$40 ~ 50K is just too much for me to risk on this type of transaction. I'd rather buy from a VCA member, a trusted supporting dealer (Tator, Woodhouse, etc.) or even search Hemmings then negotiate down.

Fortunately though, I don't need to....

Ebay is pretty good for buying cars, As in any car you are buying long distance you have to be careful and protect yourself. Simply contact the seller before you bid, state your interest in the car and work out some stipulations as to "what" would happen if you ended up the winning bidder on the car, such as having the right to inspect the car before purchasing (though a deposit will show how serious you are) and usually if the seller is being truthful they will have no problem with this.

My dad has had great results on a 70 440-4 Cuda convert, 71 340 cuda convert, 71 340 cuda and a 57 thundebird. All cars turned out great.

WOW thanks for the info Craig.

If I decide to buy another car through Ebay would you mind if I emailed you and asked how your dad went about it? I think I was REALLY lucky nothing went wrong with my deal.

Michael,

No prob go ahead, it really just lies in the sellers feedback, if they normally sell high end items such as cars and the feedback is good that releives a little worry, My dad has done this for years, buying cars sight unseen over the phone, then an inspection, if everything is good the car gets shipped here.

Email me anytime.

I really do think RT/10 and GTS prices are dropping substantially. In fact, I believe that the '00 RT/10's with low mileage will sell in the high 40's by Jan-Feb of 2003. GTS's with similar mileage will probably command the low 50's.

I have been watching and I will wait until this winter to make my buy (unless I find a great deal). Prices are falling and will even more when the new model comes out.

TobyT,

You and I have the same plan.I am going to hold out until the fall. There are two local dealers with several 2001 and 2002 GTS Vipers on the showroom floor. The price right now is $68,899 +ttl. They have been advertising this price for months. Once the new model comes out the deals may better on the 01/02's. Color is not a big factor for me so anything they have left will work.

Of course we could end up paying more for the "last" coupes...

Michael,

Are you really in the market? Check out www.traderonline.com. I just did a very cursory look, but I found several 2001 Vipers at those prices...

2001 RT w/700 miles for $61k
2001 GTS (yellow) 1600 miles for $59.9k
2001 RT 6k for $59.5k
2000 GTS 11k for $55.9k
2000 RT 1.5k for $56.9k
1999 GTS 13.k for $49.9k
1999 RT 9k $47k

There are a gaggle of 1996 and 1997 blue/white GTS's for under $45k too.

Now, these are some of the lower prices (obviously alot of folks are asking alot more), but also bear in mind these are advertised asking prices - and I'm sure most sellers would come to this level, if not go lower.

As for the '02's in the low 60's... well, I was offered an '02 last September for $66k brand new.

Also, my friend sold his '00 GTS for $59k recently and was happy to get that much.

The deals are out there. I will let you know if I come across more. I have a friend who owns a large dealership.... goes to alot of auctions. If you're serious about buying, I will talk to him and see if I can get some info on good deals on Vipers in the years you're searching for and let you know - ok?

Yes Mike I did become serious when you said especially the 96 GTS which I would expect to be more like low 40's but probably a starting price of very low 40's or even in the 30's.

I went through and did not find STARTING prices in the very low 40's as you said you had found.

If you do find one I am SERIOUS there is a $100 bird dog fee. Low milage '96 or '97 Blue and White GTS starting in the low 40's even the 30's.

Just post it here, PM me or email me THANKS.

Interestingly enough, I have actually seen some high (very high) mileage RT/10's priced in the upper 20's. It seems that it is only a matter of time before all Viper prices fall substantially.

Michael,

I don't think a GTS will sell for high 30's or very low 40's... I am just surprised they have a starting price set at $48k. Starting price is just that - as you know, it could start at $30k and sell for $50k - starting price on eBay doesn't mean a whole lot. But if you are starting at $48k, it means that's where you will take your first offer. If other similar cars actually sell for less than that, a starting price of $48k seems high. I guess I'm not the only one who thinks so, considering there are no bids on the car.

I think you could find a good 96 or 97 GTS for under $45k with no trouble (check the link I provided). I haven't seen any on eBay starting at high 30's - didn't think I had said I did. But I guess it depends on your definition of very low 40's. Folks are *asking* under $45k at traderonline.com. Why not call 'em up (or better yet show up w/$42k) and I bet you'll find the car you're looking for - and you'll have a GTS for very low 40's.

As for the fee - spend it on plugs
smile.gif
(just teasing you)

On a serious note, I will tell my car dealer friend to be on the look out for a sub $40k GTS and I will email you if he finds one... keep checking eBay but do classifieds2000 and traderonline too - I've found Vipers on this site tend to fetch premium prices, being this is "the" site for Viper afficionados.

I think once you see lots of the "new" SRT Vipers out on the road you will see a nice drop in GEN 2 Viper prices. Looks like the prices are already comming down quite a bit.

High milage cars have always been heavily hit, primarily because there are so many low mileage Vipers out there, nothing to do with reliability. Something to keep in mind: for the last three years, cars with 60K+ miles have been in the high twenties/low thirties you mention... really no movement at all at the very bottom of the market.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.... the price floor is REALLY being determined by the price of Viper parts. Try to get parts to fix a damaged car (as I have been doing for too long) and you'll soon understand that an undamaged car, no matter what the mileage, is worth 28K or up! hood, doors, interior, fenders, facias, frame, suspension, tranny, rear end......... chaaaaaaa - ching.

Hey JF, I disagree!!! When the new SRT comes out, aka S2000,you may see a RISE in gen 2 pricing!! When you see a great price, there is almost always a reason for it. Most of the Vipers I looked at had some sort of story...I paid TOP DOLLAR for my GTS but it is stunning!!!...AL...00PROWLER...

I'm standing with TobyT, I think the prices will plummet the moment the SRT shows up (lets face it a lot of these cars are going to end up on dealer floors despite the "certificates") as people trade up their Gen I's en mass. There will be a flood of cars heading to ebay and dealerships and being sold bottom dollar to provide down payments on the Srt2000. Hopefully it will be right around Xmas so I can get my dream 95rt for around 25k.

After the novelty of the SRette wears down the prices will recover and stabilize about where they are today.

Frankly, on tradersonline there already is what I would consider a "flood" of late model Vipers available considering how few of these are made.

People who like and own the GEN I would have already 'traded up' to Gen II.

They like them for vaious reasons. Mainly the ruggedness of them and some for the lower cost of them. Neither of which the SRT will have.

Also once the price of the RTs and GTS come down they aint EVER going back up. NO WAY unless of course you keep it for another 20 years in pristine condition and even then . . .

A couple months ago they had it listed for $58,900 and I offered $51K.
They dropped it to $54,500 and I offered $51K.
After 3 weeks, they just called and left a message...

I think they're getting close to taking $51K.
