My 08 Coupe is going to be done soon and i want woodhouse to do some mods before i take delivery of the car. I am going with the corsa track exhaust, but i want to remove 2 of the cats. Has anyone done this? They were not sure if i will get a check engine light on or not. But i wanted to know if anyone had any ideas or a way to do it so its perfect. Will i have a check engine light on? or will i need 02 sims?

Thanks!

On my 2006 with a SC and the corsa track I went with the 4" primary only. No codes-sounded good but I believe the primary are ceramic substrate not metal . Drivers side went bad in 7 months(5000 miles).

I am now running no cats. Really like the sound and hardly any heat on the sills but you have to put up with a little smell.

Can't speak for the 2008 but on the 2006 I understand the stock 4" secondary cats are metal substrate but it will take more welding and work to get the secondary cats installed as the only two cats.

BTW-I had the Woodhouse tranny and motor mounts installed. I really like this mod.

So you mean you had only the secondary cats removed and no lights? when you say went bad after 7 months, what exactly happened?

with all 4 cats out that you have now, you still do not not have any check engine light on? or did you do something to stop that?

Thanks!

No check light with cats out because one can installed the 02 simms that sends reading to computer that everything is ok. It is loud when you go wot but normal driving not bad at all. I do get a little smell at idle and wot but no way near what some told me I would get.

With the secondary cats only-the inside of the drivers side cat was going bad (burning up) and causing a bad smell and sill was getting extremely hot.

I will say that without the cats the sills are just a little warm to touch and also cooler inside the Viper.

One thing I did was to take the primary cats out and gut the inside and reinstalled the cat shell. It seems it acts a little like a baffle and possibly is not quite as loud as using a straight pipe.

Like I said sounds nice at normal speeds but hold on when you go wot. Shoot-I am 73 years old and I take my hearing aids out when I drive the Viper and let those Vetts & Mustangs & hot rods in my area hear what a real exhaust sounds like when I blow by them.;)
All I can say - it is wicked sounding at wot.

just love to:drive:my Viper-makes me feel 50 years younger.

You think like i do!:D good man!

Where did you get the 02 simms from? and i am sorry i was confused, when you did not have all 4 cats out, and only had 2 cats in, did you leave the primary or secondary in?

I just purchased the Corsa 3" system for my '08 plus High Flow 3" metal cats. They arrive next week.

Supposedly no CEL and can later add headers if I so elect.

I have not yet altered the secondary cats except for the Belanger set up and I wonder with the extreme finickyness of the new Venom controller if this is a plausable option. Someone please post if they have removed the second cats on an 08' car and had no light issues otherwise I will have to experiment with the car without really knowing first.

Thanks,

Just to clarify, I think that Mark was limiting his remarks to an off road use situation only since it is unlawful for a dealer to remove cats for an on road use vehicle. Right Mark?

Bob,

That is right as the Belangers and any mod to the emission system is for track cars only that we service. We will by no means alter anything on a road going plated vehicle.

Hey guys can you tell me more about removing cats? What are your suggestions? Remove all 4? Why would you only remove 2 if your removing them why not do all 4? What kind of hp / torque gain will you see on a gen 3 motor? I currently have k&n intake and tube and corsa exhaust. How exactly do you do it, cut the cats out and buy a pipe from an autoparts store thats the same size and weld it in?

A few days ago we went crusing with 5 vipers and the one was a gen 2 with supercharger and no cats and billy boat exhaust and was definately louder than mine, I really liked it. I know the gen 2s sound a bit different than the gen 3s, the bump in hp would be great too. Also do you guys suggest a tune after?

Also is it possible to put the cats back in when I goto sell it?

I think you guys missed what is being said in the above quote. The question was asked about a 2008 viper which as a brand new controller that is totally different from the 2003-2006 vipers. Has anyone removed the cats on a 2008 viper without causing drivabilty and pother PCM problems? 2003-2007 vipers without cats have no bearing on the original question so lets not lead 2008 vipers owners down what could be a very expensive road unless there is absolute proven facts to back up removing the cats.

To be honest, thats what i am looking for. I want the car do be incredibly loud and smell too!:)

Interesting......... but THE YEAR MATTERS!

As often occurs on this site, and as ROBBIE pointed out, the answers Neil is being given are ALL OVER THE PLACE .... Its a 2008 (Gen IV) motor, and all the Gen 3 replies could lead young and exuberant Neil to a stinky, loud CEL.... 2 out of the 3 he is after. And pteam's follow up questions may not be talking about an 08, but his 06....

I went the safe route. Mark convinced me to just do the Corsa Track. I got my 08 yesterday from woodhouse, and love it. The Corsa Track sounds nice, but i still would like it a bit louder. So i will run the car this way until more people play around with the 08s and removing cats. But yes, I thank everyone with the gen3 replies, but they don't apply here.

Yes Jon B is right, my follow up question above is for my 05 SRT, not an 08. I was thinking about starting a new thread to get some more replys lol

Edit by Lee....No personal attack thread hijacking please. That's an old dead horse you were beating on there.

Has anyone ever tried to remove the secondary cats only with the corsa to improve the sound of the 2008? Would this throw a CEL? Sorry to dig up an old thread. Thanks

for 08 or 09 SRT only please!
I also would like to know about removing the Second cat with the corsa track exhaust.
Would this lessen the life of the primary cat for any reason?
Increase sound (noise)?
Would this "throw" a code? :dunno:
How about Removing the primary and leaving the secondary which is Metal Substrate cat and a higher flow cat than the Primary, but with this option you would need the new PCM controler so you would not throw a code or would it? :crazy2:
Anybody?

Remember if it does throw a code(CHE) say goodbye to the factory warranty.Just out of curosity why would you want to do this.On a 600 plus horespower cat the few horsepower it MIGHT give you you will NEVER notice.

I dont care if i got 0hp out of this, to me its all for sound since with the corsa track it is still quiet. But there seems to be a way now with the new Mopar PCM to run with no cats.

Honestly ,you better think it through (if you want better sound just get a cat back ).Without a warranty it greatly decreases Gen 4 value . Also if you want to move the car in a few years and any perspective buyer does a search it will reveal the warranty got pulled (Cel ) BROUGHT ABOUT FROM THE CUSTOMER REMOVING THE CATS.

I asked if anyone had removed the secondary cats (not all 4 cats) because I am looking for a louder/more aggressive sound than with the Corsa cat back exhaust If the PCM works with high flow cats on the Belangers, I thought it might work without the secondary cats. Thanks

As any tech will tell you the Gen 4 PCMS make it a different ballgame. If you do do this it may not prodice a code for hundreds of miles of driving (computer adjusts )If a code pops up (CEL )you wouldnt know what its even for(could be for other reasons) untill a DEALER TECH scans it then its too late.
