Last night I was cruising around when a new GTO pulled up next to me and quickly sped off. He only went about a block and a half before he came up to a traffic light. A very, lonely traffic light. He stood there and looked straight ahead as if he did not know that I was right next to him. The light turns green and we both take off very slowly. I really was not going to race him when all of the sudden he nails it. I was going very slow and had just shifted into 2nd gear. He immediately pulled 1 1/2 lengths on me. I kept it in second and slammed the pedal. Before I was done with 2nd I had caught up to him. By the end of third it was the blue gts by two car lengths. The GTO let off and he accepts his defeat with a sheepish grin and a wave.

It would have been a total massacre after 3rd gear but I was still very impressed by the acceleration of the GTO. 400 HP and 33k msrp, Not a bad deal.

Lots of bang for the buck with GTO's. They were included in the employee purchase sale and could be had for cheap.

I think the only thing uglier than the new GTO is the new Charger. In my opinion, both are simply AWFUL looking cars with decent engines.

Ha....he tried to sneak in a WIN on you!

Glad you were ALMOST ready for him to make his move. And you made the POINT! :2tu:

For the money the GTS is a great car. Add some exhaust and a few goodies and they're alright.

I was over at Gateway last week with my Lexus and there was a guy there with a new GTO. I was not impressed. I didn't get to run him head to head, but he was high 14's both runs I saw. It was 94 degrees, so that probably didn't help either. They're also very heavy cars.

I think the new Charger with the 6.1 will destroy it.

I took the red Viper to the track yesterday, all stock with the exception of gears and 3"exhaust. It was very hot, 98 degrees and everyone was running slow. There was a new 400HP GTO that was only running 14.6 @ 102, I took down a 05 Viper with a 12.4 @ 118 compared to his 12.77 @ 119, I cut a best 60' of 2.05 with stock tires, all said I was happy with the run. Just installed the headers on the black Roe Viper, gotta do a tune, 10lb pully and ****. That should be fun to take ot the track. My buddy (Supercharged 04 Viper) and I are taking the Vipers downtown Orlando tonight to Orange and 50 so see if there are any street racers out that want to play, we'll try and get some video. :)

The GTO weighs less than 3400 lbs. which is less than our GTSs. They are however hurting where the rubber meets the road with only 245 tires.

If the GTO had 600HP, I'd still think it looked like Ka-Ka. That car has an image problem. Its like putting a great crate motor in an old frumpy station wagon-

Sure, its kinda fast, but absolutely NOBODY cares! :)

Toofst, The syclone would definately beat him as well.
Kwik96, Holden?
I agree the car does look way to much like a grocery getter.

I'm not sure where you got that information, but the GTO weighs 3750 with the manual tranny, and 3825 with the auto.
It's 400HP LS2 is just what the car needed to back up it's GTO name.
I'm actually happy that GM and Chrysler have come out with powerful V8, RWD, sedan/coupes like the GTO, Charger, and CTS-V. And although I'm expecting the 425HP SRT-8 Charger to keep up with the lighter, 400HP GTO, I expect that the acceleration should be comparable.

Although the GTO's looks are mild (even with the new hood scoops), at least the car wasn't overdone with giant, boy-racer wings and spoilers.

The hard part is that the 300HP Mustang GT actually comes pretty close in acceleration, and is far cheaper, and more sporty looking. And the Shelby GT500 will run away from most every sport/performance sedan out there for under $40K, when it comes out.

Congrats on the win. Sometimes it's more fun to look like you aren't even trying and shift early, having the Viper's torque smoothly pull you right by your tire-squeeling, RPM-straining, victims. :2tu:

Syclone.
the Pontiac GTO is in fact a Holden Monaro.
It is 100% manufactured at the Adelaide assembly plant and shipped to the US.
The Monaro has been the souped up version of the Holden since the early 70s and the breed has won the Bathurst 500 road race many times. Older Monaros are worth big bucks now.
They also run in the Australian supercar race series which you may have seen as it was a pre race to the Melbourne F1 this year.
In Oz you can ship your Monaro straight from the factory to HDT (Holden Dealer Team) which sort of like AMG is to Merc, and you end up with a monster of a car.

Holden also make a great looking ute (like an el camino) and they are very popular in Oz

The guys who buy these cars like them because they are a "sleeper", which to me is pointless. The only time a "sleeper" will benefit you is during a street race, which is illegal anyways. For 30,000+, give me something that looks good!
