Raced a Pro Street car, glad Macedo did my brakes

This is not a pitch for a tuner, but I wanted to thank Larry Macedo for talking me into upgrading my brakes with ss lines, pads and high temp fluid. Last week I was at the track, when I staged I thought I was going to make a solo run, but then the starter pulled a Pro Street Thunderbird into the next lane. He did a massive burnout and then after his crew had him lined up we were ready to go. I should have and will in the future backed off the line. This was probably a 6 second car, a street car no matter how fast should not be lined up with a full race car. The lights went green and I left hard, he was ahead of me but not by much, he was spinning bad. At about the 900 - 1000 ft mark (Well over 100 mph) I was still hanging with him, not because my car is fast, but because he was still spinning. Then his back end got loose and he crossed the center line, I went for the brakes and prayed. The Viper stopped like I had a parachute, and the pro street car regained control. There was no accident, but boy it was close. As soon as I have more money in the car kiddy I'm going for those stoptechs, thanks Larry.

Great reaction on your behalf John, Glad you were paying attention :) As far as your break setup, which I have with stop tech rotors, it is awesome, but really didnt not help you in that situation. The stainless lines with higher temp fluid prevent the spongy feeling you get after running the car hard at a road course. Now depending on the pads you went with that might be the reason the car stoped like a champ ;)

What fluid did you use?

Well, the fluid is a Ford high temp fluid, which is the same, but a lot less than the race fluid. Most ford Dealerships have. Don't tell anybody I am using Ford anything in my car.

How do the stainless steel lines do that?

The rubber lines expand under heavy load. Steel braided is a good upgrade for any car.

Pads for a dragstrip probably should be a different compound than for a track, anybody? I also suspect DOT 4 fluid (factory recommend) would suffice for a dragstrip. Just guessing, since there is no way a drag car heats brakes up like a track car. Nonetheless an ounce of prevention...

Macedo does great work. It's nearly a two hour drive from Tampa but it's worth it. I let very few work on my Vipers. Larry gets the first call.

I would never line up next to a car with slicks or one that can wax me by a second or more. I've seen just what you've described and that was enough for me. No sense in risking racking your car because the guy in the other lane can't keep it there.

Congrats! (Must have been your secret Ford Juice that did it)

I did not beat him, I just about came to a complete stop 3/4 the way down the track, I had to put it in second to finish, interestingly I still ran a 15 second something. The pads on the car are EBC greens. I didn't like them at first, but once they broke in they worked a lot better. With these minor upgrades the car definitely stops better, much better pedal feel.

I know exactly how you feel. I was almost T boned by a mustang. Since then I have never lined up against a car that does not look streetable.

John..... That would have been a adrenaline rush to line up against a Pro Street car and then to be running a good race against him until he got sideways......I would have like to seen a video of your facial (or hand gesture) expression when he started to cross the line.

Glad to hear you were OK ...... you probably had to empty your underware! Orlando track is so poorly preped compared to Bradenton. I am look forward to running Gainesvile Oct.11 on our Central & N. Florida drag racing day.
