Does anyone know the reason for the 998/999 recalls? I realize that some vehicles have cracks and the description I got was that the steering box could come loose. Is their a deficiency in the metal, rigidity or thickness of the metal frame? so far I haven't found any discussion of the true cause resulting in the recalls. If the frame is weak how will patching or gussets make a difference? over time will problems reoccur and will DC do the right thing after your warranty is done?
I was not even aware of the problem until last weekend I posted an inquiry and lo and behold I got a call from the dealership 9:45 Monday morning to inform me of the recall. Go Figure...

Looks to me like it makes the connection between things stronger by reinforcing how the steering rack is tied in. Doesn't mean the frame itself is weak.

Has there ever been a problem with street cars (no track use/no race tires)?

Specifically; I was wondering what caused the problem. Does anyone have any info of testing and results, or was it simply a matter of a lot of cars having a similar problem and a number of complaints.

My car had cracks in the steering rack mount. I noticed them during a post-track undercar inspection. I did not experience a catastrophic failure, nor did the steering ever feel "funny."
