You're not supposed to let the A/C gas into the environment, it's nasty stuff; don't come into contact with it yourself either! There are professional companies that will come and discharge it for you at quite a fee. But, once a connection in the system is 'cracked' open, you will hear a hiss, walk away and return later when the air's cleared...!

Condenser just sits in there on rubber mounts, easy to remove, once you've got past every thing else in the way! When you do remove it all, seal off all connections in the pipes etc where the A/C gas flows. You don't want any moisture from the atmosphere getting into the lines. (If you re-fit and moisture has got into the system when you get it re-pressurized, it can lead to A/C pump failure as the moisture will attack internals in the pump). You can remove the pulley / unit and run a Viper ACR belt.

Best wishes, and with those drag times too.

Actually Nadine, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think exposure to freon (or the new refrigerant) is a safety or health concern (to humans)... unless you consider the ozone depletion contributing to sun poisoning a human health concern.

I believe the BIG concern is when thousands of cars were venting their freon into the atmosphere (along with all those roof top A/C units on top of buildings).

To prepare for the coming Drag racing season, will I among other things to reduce weight, remove the AC in my Viper. Is there anybody on the list that have done this? Willing to share any tips on what to do or not to do, before I dig into it. Or is it just to pull all of it out and swap to a 92-94(w/o AC) sepentine belt...?

Thanxs, then I just have to get someone to help me with the Freon or wht it's called, order a new Sepentine Belt...easy ;-)

About Vipers in Europe...Sweden, Can promise that people love them, they are kinda bored of the more common cars like Porsches, Ferraris...etc The Viper and the Lambos get most attention. There is only 25 Vipers in total in Sweden. The only one Competing in Dragracing in Europe is mine :)
10.90 and improving! (Super Street index is 10.90)

If you are real serious, how about removing the power steering pump and rack? Saves about 10lbs. over all. and even re-claims a little horsepower.
You can remove the pump alone, retain your rack by using a recirculating hose, a loop if you will and by using a 71 inch, 6 rib belt. (71" only if you have also removed the A/C. An A/C service center can put caps on the in/out of the dryer and pump to keep moisture out.)

Just my 2-cents.

134A has an ODP (ozone depletion potential) that is just 2% of F-12. 134A is, therefore, much friendlier to the environment.

134A is nether flammable nor toxic, but as with most any gas can deplete oxygen in a confined space.

One question I have concerns yield. Remove the a/c, lose 100 or so lbs., gain 0.1 sec. or thereabouts. Hardly seems worth it!

0.1 second would be great! I have never used the AC, live in Sweden...and do only use the car for shorter drives or Racing.
When doing longer tours do I prefer the Bimmer... ;-)

The AC removal is just one of the weight savings operations I'm doing. The goal is to get rid of at least 200lbs

A 1/10 in dragracing, especially when you hit low 11's / high tens is huge!

Ok, remove the AC the power steering, gain maybe 5 plus horse and loose the weight! Now that has got to be more than a 1/10th. Here's a picture of how we do it if your interested.

Double Venom,
How will it look on a Gen1 engine? Can I use the belt you mentioned?

JP,

I've never played with a Gen. 1 engine. However, we have one in the shop now we are customizing, (Jay Herbert's - sorry it's taking so long Jay! A little more patience gr****opper

)

I'll take a serious look at it today and see if this set-up wont work.

Pure stock Gen 2, MT/ET slicks: 11.01 at 128 with a 1.51 60'(should have been a 10:97 run..dang it!)

JP,
Just took a look at Jays Gen.1 and I don't see any problems at all. Since the alternator is in a different location than the Gen. 2, you may have to play with belt size is all.

If it was dragstrip season around here, I'd let you know how much it helps!

Well, since I bought a kit to install it, here is what the kit had in it....

1) the radiator
2) the lines (2 of then)
3) compressor and mounting bracket
4) dryer
5) evaporator core (it is inside the passanger side dash) To remove this, remove the lines first. Open the caseing and remove the element inside, looks like a small radiator. also remove the temp gauge sensor in the housing
6) serpentive belt is shorter now like Viper Wizard said

That is it my friend....and a helpful hint that Tony of Sir Hiss told me, tuck in te side mirrors for less drag.
