Removing cats on 96-97\'s ???

I have a question?? On 96-97 GTS's can the cats be removed with out a check engine light or O2 simulators?? Has anyone picked up any power from this mod. On my 00 ACR I picked up over 10 rwhp and lost a ton of heat. The car did not run super rich either. But, I did have rear O2 simms.

I removed the cats on my '97 RT/10 about 2 weeks ago. The car has Borla headers and exhaust. The car sounds great. No check engine light. I didn't re-dyno it, but it sounds faster

I have heard of people complaining of the odors after cat removal......I have not noticed anything obtrusive, and the sills are much cooler.

Happy motoring,

Great!! So, you removed them and inserted straight pipe in there place. My 00 pulled much harder on top end after I removed them. The larger came cars should benefit more.

Removed my cats and didn't notice any obtrusive smells either but I know it caused one car behind me in a drive-thru to move back

He stayed a few cars back the rest of the time.

Tony did you get a new Viper?

If you do remove the cats I would be very curious if the fumes are bad.

With the 66 degrees of overlap versus the 60 degrees like on mine it seems you would be putting a lot of unburnt fuel in the exhaust which could be really "fummey" at idle.

I know my 97's fumes would be REALLY strong at times when idling with the cats on.

I would like to put a bigger cam in my 00 ACR but am afraid that adding more overlap could make it too fumey.

Yes, just bought a 96 Blue and White GTS with 2900 miles. The car for all purposes is brand new. The SRT-10 deal has been taken care of. I will post some pics when the rain stops. I have installed a set of 00 shorty headers and brand new chrome ACR wheels and tires

I have Balanger Headers and cat back no cats and my car pulled 452rwhp and 512rwt. I do have a slight fume smell. My car is a '96 GTS. I have a 250hp NOS kit but have not made a dyno on button. Kenric

That's excellent for a genI car. I have the 00 style shorty headers installed on my 96 GTS. It will be nice to see what it pulls with out the cats.

I cut the cat and rear muffler on my 96 GTS replacing with straight pipe only. Now sounds the way it should.
