Reverse switch removal question

Well the back-up light problem was in fact the switch in the tranny.

Now to remove it, I have a question, does it matter if it is in reverse or should it be in another gear?

Just dont want springs, rods, etc to come flying out when I remove it :-(

Put it in neutral and Torque the new switch to 25 ft.lbs.
