I'm considering a new in dash replacement stereo. This is mainly because the OE CD player is beginning to show signs of breaking but also because I'd very much like to upgrade to Sat radio.

I'm really not looking to make any significant changes. No interest in major amplifiers, sub-woofers, fold out video screens, etc. I'm just looking for a new head unit that would fit and add Sat radio. Since my main focus is driving and without the top, the road noise is considerable, I have no interest in making a serious investment. I also don't want to add an mp3 player to the existing system. Is there a reasonable head unit out there that fits nicely that can be bought at a reasonable price? Say $400-$500?

There are hundreds of choices. It just depends on what you want. Since you know your preferences It's a matter of looking at the right model. Check crutchfield.com for a wide selection. Their prices are a little high though.

Scott. I just did this. I went with an Alpine CDA-9885 and Sirius SIR-ALP1. I paid about $350.00 for both from Crutchfield. For another $30.00 you can get a direct wire for your Ipod. This headunit seems to match fairly well with the rest of the dash.

You'll need a stereo shop to fabricate an adapter for the end of the amp cable if you want to retain the stock amplifier. Here are a few links that discuss this:

I'm looking at a JVC alternative. The specs are close to Alpine, however the JVC unit features DVD MP3 play which will add a nice alternative to Sirius (with just 1 DVD of 100hrs).

I don't think it plays video. It DOES play DVD MP3 which you can burn yourself. A single DVD can hold about 100 hours of music which, I guess, is akin to a Shuttle Ipod....you knucklehead!

Mrs. Doubtfire??? LOL
