Your a lucky SOB if you can get your hands on that car. If I had the money I would buy that in a heartbeat. Good luck!

Ron,
My guess is that you wouldn't have to pay sales tax on a "car" purchase, as a Comp Coupe doesn't have a VIN, and therefore, no title - you are buying a bunch of parts.... DMV has nothing to do with your transaction.

Only those folks who took delivery of their Comp Coupes in North Carolina (I know your favorite state...) had to pay SALES tax, not the usual 3% car sales tax....

I'm in California, if I buy a race car from it's original owner do I have to pay sales tax seeing it is not registered with DMV?

SoCal Rebell,
I think your have to pay 8.25%(L.A. county) 7.25%(Ventura county)sales tax over your total transaction. But check with your local DMV.

I think legally you do have to pay, but practically if nobody knows.... Is there any purchase that is tax free in the US? I bet that if would ask a tax attorney, cpa, etc, he would say that you would owe the tax. JMHO.
