I live in Florida and use my soft top all the time. Like anything else practice makes perfect. I was heading to Miami last Saturday for that Viper meeting, coming across Rt. 75, when I had to stop and put the top on for some HEAVY rain. Took two minutes and didn't get one drop in the car. Love that dialectric grease.

Ok, even though I have an ancient Viper, I still believe the car either looks best with the top off and then second best with the hardtop on. The softtop in my opinion does not look as good as the Mopar Hard top. I believe it is about a $3800-$4000 option.

I know living in the Northeast you just about need a hardtop. I think if I lived in Florida, I would be more inclined to just use the soft top or no top at all, which probably is most of the time for you guys in Florida.

The nice thing about the softtop is for those of us who cruise most of the time with the top off, is you can actually take it with you and throw it on in an emergency, and you obviously cannot do that with the hardtop.

Either way, I am sure you will love the RT in Florida and if I lived where you lived I would not be to concerned about getting the hardtop.

It takes less than 5 minutes to remove the top and get it stowed in the trunk. It just takes getting used to it and some practice. The main issue is that when the top is in the trunk, you don't have much room, but you don't start with much room to begin with. I live in Florida and don't even have a hardtop and only put the soft-top on when I see storm clouds rolling in, because as a black man I need to make sure I maintain my year round tan.

I only have the soft top. Admittedly it ain't fun taking it on or off but it's not that bad.

It takes 5 seconds to unclip the rear, it takes about ten seconds to unhinge the front levers, 5 seconds to get out of the car and another 5 seconds to lift the roof off the car. Now you've spent 25 seconds to get the roof off the car. If you're at home when you do this and don't want to bring the roof with you (a choice you don't have with the hard top), then you're done. That is usually what I do, I've only folded mine up maybe two times to put it in the trunk. I have NOS in the trunk and still have room for the roof when folded so space isn't a problem.

Now if you really want to have it with you, it takes about 30 seconds per side to unscrew (at least on the old style like mine) the pins. Another 10 seconds to fold in the supports and maybe another 30 seconds (if you're anal) to roll the pieces into a tube. Then let's say another 20 seconds to open the trunk, prop up the support, grab the roof and lie it in the trunk. Another 8 seconds to relock the trunk support and close it. Let's see, that puts you at 2 minutes and 8 seconds to get it in the trunk.

Reassembly is just everything in reverse and takes the same amount of time.

The problem is, and I'm sure this is what your friend is referring to when he says its a pain, it's 2 minutes and 33 seconds in total that you could be driving instead!!

It takes me not even a minute to assemble the soft top. The pain for me is the rear window. I have a V-Mania hard top and love it. I leave the top on only if it looks like it is going o drizzle or I go out at night. Don't worry, it is easy to put on....

I have both tops because I like both looks.
If I were to have to choose one or the other I would take the soft top. Especially if I go away for the weekend etc. You can store the top for nice weather. Then you have the top if you need it. It goes on and off in less than 5 minutes. I do carry a large towel in the trunk to lay the top on while I break it down or put it together.
If you have to have a Viper that folds and stores in place then you have to wait and get the new SRT10.
Good luck.

I would only add that with the hard top installed, the car, essentially, becomes a coupe. By that I mean...it is quiet. Here in the NE it seems to be essential (due to cold weather) but perhaps not so in the SE. Regardless, I have to admit that it is nice to have the option to "convert" the car when on a long trip. Just my .02.

BTW, when purchased with a new RT, the Mopar top is an additional $2,500.
