The 97 RT/10 had smooth hood. There was one Blue RT/10 with no stripes (he was Jim Holden's neighbor).

The 97 also had real windows, but since you are a Cobra fan you might not like this feature?

Jeff,

The '97 RT/10's are probably the most desirable. Classic blue/white color combo with Gen II motor (50 hp upgrade), windows, etc. - only 57 made. Usually fetch a premium price. Single year color combo for RT/10.

Yellow was available in '00.

No real options for RT/10's except stripes or hard top. Most RT/10's after '93 have a/c. '98 RT/10's were the first year to have the Gen II hood.

If you don't mind me asking - how much did you sell your Cobra for?

Well, to blow my own horn, the 96 RT/10 is the best one...You should be able to get a nice one for your price range, I paid $45K for mine last summer (when prices were a little higher) with ~ 6K miles, warranty, hardtop, etc...One owner too!

The 96's have the GTS frame, and the aluminum suspension, and the 415Hp as mentioned. There are specific colour combos for 96, I believe its the first year that the RT/10s got stripes!! There were only 3 bases colours, white with blue stripes, red with yellow wheels (aka Ketchup & Mustard edition) and the black with silver stripes. For my white car, the leather on teh steering wheel, shift know and parking brake are blue also.

I have been told by JonB that the 96 RT/10 has the stongest frame, becuase it does not have crumple zones built into it.

I hope I got it straight, if I did not, someone will correct me!

Jeff- So you say you have $40,000-$45,000 to spend. What did you do with the rest of the cake? Buy a couple of houses?

Good luck with your search. I can not help to much, mine is a 92.

The GTS frames do have frames with dimples in the frame rails to allow the frame to crumple on front impact. In my opinion the 97 blue Rt-10 is the way to go as you get the only RT which came from the factory with painted stripes and the killer blue color. You get the better frame and the stronger engine. What else could you ask for? Also the last of the smootie hoods. You can always install side pipes if that is what you want.

By the serial number was that an SC? I had a ride in a friends 64 289 car some 15 years ago at Road America. That was quit an experiance which really helped me make the decision to want the Viper when it was first proposed. You will probably welcome the more civilized ride but the stock exhaust note will do nothing for you. By the way the friend traded his 289 and 427 for one of the 3 factory race cars campained in 63. Beautiful black roadster.

THE COBRA WAS AN SC SPEC CAR..(SIDE PIPES,HOOD SCOOP ,ROLL BAR,COMP GAS CAP ECT)

A REAL MONSTER

500 HORSEPOWER /500LBS OF TORQUE IN A 2,250 LB CAR!

FOR THE PEOPLE WHO SEEM OFFENDED BY WHAT I LISTED AS MY PRICE RANGE $45,000-50,000.

THIS WAS A PLACE TO START!

I CAN ALWAYS GO UP!

BASED ON MY VERY LIMITED RESEARCH I HAD SEEN A FEW 93-97 RT-10 VIPERS ADVERTIZED IN THAT PRICE RANGE USUALLY RED OR BLACK!

I AM ALSO LEARNING THAT I THINK I SHOULD LOOK FOR A 1997-1998 RT-10..THEY ARE THE BEST YEARS??

The best years will be defined by your own personal choices. Do you want a basic model (no air, window) to remind you of your Cobra? Do you want the more refined model (windows, air, more HP) that the later models offer? There is no overall right answer, only your personal preference can determine what best suits your needs.

1) IS THERE ANY YEAR RT-10 ROADSTER THAT WAS BETTER OR MORE DESIRABLE?

Depends on what you want. I wanted side tailpipes and Yellow. The meant a 94 or a 95 even though the 96+ had more horsepower. In the end, I picked the 95. The 96+ had real windows and are much more 'drivable' cars. They even have door handles! The pre-96 were more primitive but sound better (IMHO) thanks to the side pipes. If I really had to drive it and count on it as transportation, I would have to go with a 96+. But if I wanted a toy that I could play with occasionally, then the 94/95 would be my preference. (Forget about them in the rain though!)

4) WHAT YEARS WAS YELLOW OFFERED?

The yellow is different between the 94/95 and the 2001/2002. The newer yellow is a little darker (like the Corvette yellow). Keep in mind that they only made like 20 yellow cars in 94 (exact number is posted somewhere) so almost all of them will be 95.

5) WAS AIR CONDITIONING STANDARD?

Not always, but most have it, especially 94 or later.

7) WHAT IF ANY ARE THE PROBLEM AREAS TO INSPECT?

My $0.02 on this. First, check the air dam and see if it has scratches on the bottom. If it does, that means it is probably original and hasn't been wrecked or damaged. I haven't seen a car that didn't have at least a few scratches on the underside of the airdam.

Two, check for the brake cooler. The pre-96 cars (or was it 97) had a design flaw that could allow the brake cylinder to blow and cause a fire when driven hard. Putting the cooler on is pretty simple and cheap.

3. Check the idle at low speeds. Vipers feature two cables that can be hard to get in synch. It's easy if the tech knows how to do it, but some people leave them off.

That is about it. They really are reliable cars.

THANKS FOR YOUR IN ADVANCE FOR ANY INFO YOU CAN PROVIDE!

And just to make it a little worse, why don't you consider another Cobra? I have the Viper for my street car and a Factory Five spec racer as the toy. They are complimentary in terms of handling (Viper runs circles around Cobra though), have great looks, and are both impractical. The Cobra is faster off the line and sounds better (sigh. _MUCH_ better), but the Viper has handling to die for.

Have fun! Let's go play!

Do you mean a power steering cooler? That happened in '96, I believe.

Jason, nice info on your website. Here are a couple updates. The 96 RT/10 did not have standard air bags. Mine has none.

The GTS and the RT/10 for 96 have the same suspension/frame. Minor note on side curtains, the 96 RT/10 has more window like sliding side windows...No zippers.

Tomer..
