I am planning on changing my spark plugs and wires. I was wondering how difficult it is to get to them and what do I need to know. What is the proper gap and what torque do they need to be tightened too? Is this going to be an easy 1,2,3 thing or are some of the plugs a pain to get to? I want to thank you a head of time for all the help.

Thanks

Plumcrazy: I changed the spark plugs myself, Champion RC12LYC) no big deal. Set to factory gap (.035) and tighten the plugs about wrist tight (or about 18-20 ft lbs). Can't help you with the wires as I haven't changed mine but doesn't appear to be a tough job. I stuck with the factory plugs and would probably get the factory wires to put back on if your car is just driven once and awhile like my 98 GTS is.

Plugs and wires are a piece of cake......pop off the wiper arms, remove the cowl underneath that is held in place by 4 screws, one behind each door and 2 in the middle, then....grow really skinny arms and start removing plugs and wires one by one until youre done........took me less than an hour to do all of them.

Some people think its easier if you remove the top part of the AC inlet cover on the pass side of the engine, if you have small hands you shouldnt need too.

It's really easy now that I've done it recently. Here are some tips from my first experience.

1) The wipers do need to be removed to get the cowl off as stated above. Just pull up on the plastic caps at the base of the wipers to expose a nut, then loosen. The caps can be hard to pry off, one side came off with just my fingers, the otherside took a screwdriver.

2) Don't bother taking the windshield washer fluid tubing apart, just undo the wipers and cowl and set them up the the windshield.

3) Use a plug wire puller, makes the job sooo much easier

4) Watch out when loosening the plugs, if I remember correctly, my plug #10 had corroded and when I loosened it, the ceramic busted leaving a bunch of gray shrapnel around the plug hole. I blew it all out with compressed air before completely removing the plug. Make sure to blow out all plug holes before removing plugs.

5) Getting to the rear most plug on the drivers side was made easier by removing the plug wire holder right above it and using a swivel joint socket holder.

6) No problem getting to the coil packs if your arms are small to medium.

7) I also used Champion RC12LYC's gapped to 0.035, they were suppose to be pre-gapped but I checked and half of them were off. Also at least half of them had electrodes that were not aligned with the ground, not sure if it's a big deal but being anal, I corrected it.

8) So far, the VIPER has been the easiest car I have ever worked on; everything seems to be in plain site!

Good luck!

OT: Seems like this thread is turning into a 98' GTS thread! Lol

I've done the drill once & will never do it again. My arms & hands are just too big. I got scabbed up bad.

What is a Plug Wire Puller? can I get one at Autozone?

My hands are "plug wire pullers."

Honestly, you need a tool to get them off??? Mine just come off when I pull. And it's not like am Arnold Schwarzenegger or something. I just pull until they come off.

Pull the boot, not the wire itself.
The metal heat shields remove eaily with pliers. Now you can get a good grip on the boot. Rotate the boot if you are having difficulty.

A couple of FYIs...

1. Take a vacuum or air blower and blow out any debris that may have fallen down around the spark plug. Little stones and sand seem to collect there - especially if you've been in an area that has loose gravel and have sticky tires....

2. Check the cylinder heat shielding - they seem to get loose.

3. Dab a little dialectric grease in each boot to help make a good connection and make installation and removal easier.

4. Use a little antiseize on the plugs and use a spark plug socket to tighten to the correct torque.

have fun!
