Okay gang, sorry for the short notice but here it is: The folks from SRT have generously offered to host a chat on the SRT Q&A Forum for Viper owners (and prospective owners) on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. It will take place here from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time (that's 5:00 Central, 4:00 Mountain and 3:00 Pacific):

http://forums.viperclub.org/showthread.php?t=606167

Now this is your chance to chat directly with SRT employees about the Viper platform - be it old or new. Got a question about your Gen I head gaskets? Ask 'em. Your Gen II brakes? Ask 'em. Convertible top on your Gen III? Ask 'em. The cam on the Gen IV? Ask em!

Just understand that ALL questions about future product (anything beyond the already published information on the 2008 model) will be ignored if not deleted by our moderating staff first. Chrysler/SRT personnel are strictly forbidden from commenting about future product, so don't waste your typewriting. Our moderators will be standing by and will delete without warning - other than this one. ;)

Given the short notice, we would encourage you to start posting questions on that thread immediately. Our web staff will consolidate those questions into one reply before the actual chat starts and SRT will review them beforehand as well. As stated above, we reserve the right to edit or delete those questions that SRT cannot answer due to company policy. Also note that questions on THIS thread may be ignored as the Q&A will be on the thread shown above.

We look forward to your questions and seeing you there on the 19th!

Chris --

Thanks to you and SRT for posting; here goes:

1) Any updated information on the availability of the Mopar Cold Air Intake featured on the 675 hp Viper Concept Coupe?

2) We have heard interesting information from Luke at TireRack and various magaizines such as Road & Track regarding the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires on the 2008 Viper; the consensus is that these tires are "different" and customized for the Viper but there is debate about what the differences are. Some magazines claim that these tires use a softer R-compound such as that used for the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup. Luke and information from Micehlin states that the tread depth is different but that the compound is same as the standard PS2. Can you give us a list of the differences between the regular and Viper-spec PS2?

3) I plan on installing an Autoform rollbar (bolt-on not welded to the frame) on my 2008 whenit arrives. I assume the answer is no but is there anything about the frame or structure of the car in the cabin area that would be different compared to the 2003-2006s?

Thanks for your time and feedback.

/Rich

I posted my question on the other link, but is there a picture of that intake anywhere?

Vipermann --

The first picture is of the Viper Concept Coupe, equipped with a Mopar cold air intake:

The next picture is of the standard 2008 air intake:

As you can see, the Concept Coup intake does appear quite a bit wider than the stock unit; beyond that, we have no details about the Mopar cold air intake. The interesting thing is that when you look at the stock car, the air intake aligns very precisely with the hood scoop:

So my quesiton would be: If the hood scoop stays the same, wouldn't widenng the air intake opening simply let in more hot, underhood air (as opposed to the cold air coming through the hood scoop) thereby defeating the purpose of a cold air intake?

SRT engineers, can you respond to this? Thanks in advance if you can.

Good question. It sure doesn't look like it would take advantage of any larger filter. Only thing I can think of is that it might also draw more air from in front (over the top) of the radiator.

Interesting; I guess my question would still be is that over-the-radiator air actually cooler than the underhood air? In other words, does the Viper engine bay also receive significant cold air from the openings in the front fascia as well as from the hood scoop?

What's the id size of the headers? Is it 1.5 in? If it is, why so small for an engine that size? I should say for a cylinder that size (4x4).

Sorry, what does "id size mean"? Are you referring to the headers on the stock 08 or the Concept Coupe?

Additional questions for the SRT engineers regarding the 2008 Vipers:

1) Can you confirm whether the factory fill motor oil is still Mobil 0w40 synthetic?;

2) Can you confirm the break-in procedure for the 2008s?; and

3) Can you confirm what the factory-recommended tire pressures are for the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2? The owners manual specified 29 psi all around for the previous Michelin Pilor Sport ZP tires. Is this still the case for the new tires? As a side note, the older 2003-2006s had a greater tendency to understeer than the 2008s (at least according to recent magazine tests of the 2008). On my 2006 Viper, I set the pressures to 34 psi front and 30 psi rear for track and "spirited" driving to dial out some understeer. Would you still recommend this staggered air pressure or would you recommend the same pressures all around given the 2008s more neutral handling characteristics?

Thanks in advance for responding and thank you for doing a great job on the 2008s. Can't wait to drive mine.:)

Inside diameter is correct; my apologies for assuming everyone knows what id means! I'm referring to the 03-06 Viper years but I would also like to know for the 08s too.

I would just go out ot the garage and measure my 08 headers for you but I have already packed, taped and stapled the boxes closed again. I did take some pics of the 08 headers and I realize you can't measure ID size from a photo but hopefully this is large enough to give you some idea:

Hope this helps.

This might seem like a simple question but the service person at the Dodge dealership put 11 quarts of oil instead of 10 when I had the oil changed. Should I just leave it alone or go back and have the extra quart removed. I have a 2004 SRT. thanks,

I think the SRT engineers answered this one already, but I'll paraphrase it here: Because some combinations were simply ruled out by the design office as being a poor representation of the Viper. Green with red stripes? Not likely. They looked at the available color/interior options and simply decided what would or would not work. Black stripes on a black car? Of course not. There are well over 800 different combinations available with the 2008. In 2003 there were, drum roll please........... three - as 3. We also had to walk uphill both ways to school in six feet of snow. And by God, we had to like it! So enjoy your 800+ choices and have pity on us old timers.
