Viperholics,

I still need to do the 'Steering Rack' recall. Do they remove the differential to make the repairs? I have a complete differential with different gears that I want to install. I figured I could try and kill 2 birds with 1 stone....

Thanks in advance...

To check the Diff mounts correctly for cracks it MUST be removed! Looks like you can get the two birds with the one stone. At least that would happen here at my store! Who knows what another Dealer would do?

onerareviper, if you have a 99 or 2000...recall is 999...front end only.

If you have 96-98, recall is 998...front and rear.

So if you need 998, mAY be easier for you to get your change accomplished.

onerareviper,

According to the NHTSA, 1998, needs the rear differential recall
Go here: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/
and click on RECALS (upper left corner), and follow instructions to input your car details (i.e. Automobile, 1998, Dodge, Viper, select recall).
According to the NHTSA, ALL through (including 1999) need the rear suspension recall. 2000 + do not.
Later,

....and, don't forget to ask for NEW straps and bolts for your diff. and halfshafts...it takes 6 straps and 12 bolts...purchase them in advance from Wizard or JonB...cheap insurance in MY opinion.

Oddly, all Viper service manuals mandate replacement of the bolts and straps if removed as Steve mentions, yet the recall instructions do not mention it and if the dealer does on his own, he runs the risk that they will not be reimbused as they are not part of the recall kit.

Seems like an odd position to take, given the minimal cost of the bolts and straps versus the implications if they fail.
