I know this has been discussed before here and there a little bit, but has anyone found a replacement head unit they like? Did they stick with Alpine because of the connectors? I have a 97gts and would like to get a better unit in the $200 to $400 range.
Also does anyone have any recomondations for a good speaker upgrade that will fit in the stock places or at most a small subwoofer in the trunk area like those bazooka tube or something. I am looking to get a nice range in sound, not just a thump thump like the teenagers have in their mustangs and ricers. Thanks for any replies.

I like the Kenwood Excelon system I had installed in my 2000 RT/10. For speakers I went with the Polk MOMOs and they are really nice! I had a little bit of custom work done to install tweeters in the rear bar of the RT/10 and put an amplified subwoofer along with a power amp, and 10 CD changer in the trunk. The single "woofer" between the two seats was replaced with one of the Polk MOMOs and crossed over as a mono midrange. Anybody that has heard my system is very impressed with the quality. I'm very happy. Here are a few pics:

I have recently installed a 10" JL Audio W3 into the space between the driver and passenger seats. The back-panel was removed, a custom enclosure made, and the entire panel was recasted(in the car) in fiberglass to ensure a factory look and fit. In addition, I installed a Sony MP3 player for the dash(a single MP3 encoded disc holds ~150 songs; thereby ensuring maximum space in the trunk and no clutter from discs laying adrift), MB Quart 5 1/4 components and tweets in the doors(using the stock mountings) and a 3 channel chrome Xtant amp in the trunk. I then had a beauty board made to cover the amp as to protect it from the windows/top if I decide to put them in the trunk. I finished the job with plenty of red neon in the amp as well as above it, to give it the show car appeal. If you wish, as soon as I get some pics on disc, I'll forward them to you.
Good thing about this mod is that the stock back panel can easily be reinstalled thereby ensuring your warranty will not be voided and if you decide to buy another snake, you can take your investment with you. The boom you get from a single JL W3 10" is amazing, especially right next to you.
