Just purchased my 2002 RT/10. Not to impressed with the stock radio. Came with a alpine. Is this the norm?

yes, Alpine.
Speakers from shadow?
Although many have put in new head units and really woke them up

I second that. After bying a real nice updated Alpine head unit I realized I prefer the engine so I never really listen to music anymore.

Reaplce it all. Head unit, speakers and amp. Too nice a car to have it playing crap sounding tunes.

I haven't heard the system in an RT/10, but the acoustics of the car must make it sound terrible. In my GTS, I have everything stock except I added a 10" sub and it sounds like a concert hall! Key was to fade it mostly to the rear and keep bass/treble near zero.

You get almost no high frequencies from the rear cause the speaker is firing at the trunk. The acoustics from either model is terrible.

Yep acoustics are terrible, but replace everything. No sense in spending alot because it will not sound perfect. But replacing the head unit, adding amp, subs and componets up front will dramatically improve the sound. You can do all of this for $800 or less. Check out Blaupunkt transparent line of speakers, cheap but good sound quality for the price.
