I changed my front Stoptech brake pads for the first time and noticed something strange, The outer most part of the pad (about 1/32nd of an inch) was not in contact with the rotor and a small "lip" had formed over the edge of the rotor. Is this normal? I called Stoptech customer service and the said not to worry, any opinons?

Socal, I have seen this lip on a rear aftermarket caliper that was mounted in such a way that a portion of the pad was positioned just past the outermost diameter of the rotor. Obviosly the wear will cause that lip to form. It isn't a big deal except that optimally you want to use all the pad surface if possible. If this the case with the Stoptechs then all of them should exhibit this lip. Is this your first set of pads with the Stoptechs? If this is not the case then check to make sure that the pad has been installed all the way and the calipers were mounted correctly.

Ron,

I'm guessing that this is not just the chamferred edges that you would see on the stock pads, but along the the whole outer most edge of the pad. I'm also guessing that you are worried that either the stop tech pads are chamferred along that edge intentionally or the pad was somehow stuck at an angle when installed, correct? A couple of pics would help, but stop tech would be the ones to answer that concern.

Rotors usually develop a lip on the outer and inner most edges because the pads are usually a bit smaller that the rotor surface. I would be worried about uneven wear on the contact surface.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

P.S. Ron, when it comes to concerns about brakes, I always worry until proven otherwise.
