I purchased a 1994 R/T 10 (black) approx. one year ago. Recently I noticed stress cracks in the hood. I've been told that the hood design of the Viper was changed in 1995 to stop this problem. I called the D.C. customer service line, and after talking to several different people they were VERY uninterested in addressing the problem. D.C. stated the car was too old, and they were not aware of a stress crack problem. Can anybody help me?????????

That's ridiculous. They might be uninterested, but they are very aware of the problem. Every single Gen I I've see has had the problem. It is especially obvious on our black cars because the cracks look white.

Not sure what you can do. I'm having mine repainted soon but on my own coin. I've heard of someone getting it done by DC but I'm not up for the effort in fighting for that. I'd probably spend more time getting it paid for by DC than it is worth.

I can gaurantee they didn't fix the problem in 95 and I have the hood that will prove it. I have the same exact problem, but we are trying to figure out what to do about it right now.

I have heard (solidly 4th hand info, so reliability is questionable) that there was some sort of molding problem with the earlier hoods, that the factory used up to 1/4 to 3/8 inch filler to make the hood shape right...THen of course teh filler cracks...

Anyone know if this is true? I have had a body shop guy swear to it (not a Viper owner) as he has worked on some of these older hoods and has ground em down trying to fix it...

My stress are all over the hood. They are more prevalent on the front of the car and slowly dissapate towards the winshield.

The hood on my project is off an Early '93, it has about a dozen stress cracks. Following the methods I learned, I ground down 'till I hit "paydirt"....I went through clearcoat, colorcoat, primer, a different color primer, spot putty, filler, a different color filler.... then I finally got to the glass. The hood was as it left the factory. Ed at Classics by Elite has the hood (and the rest of my car) now, and he is going to redo the work I did, he plans to remove a larger area around the cracked areas then I did. I used "Kitty Hair" from Evercoat to fill the areas I did, last summer when I saw the hood, my repairs still had not cracked (but the car has not moved much). I did the original repairs over three years ago. I was once told by a "person in the know" that the hood I have likely cost more that the rest of the '93 it came off... after seeing all the bodywork under the paint, I don't doubt it. My advice, have Ed fix the hood (after he is done with my and Janni's cars), or leave it alone.

One driver of the Chapter III "traditional" hood was all the problems/warranty complaints with the giant piece of glass we have come to love. If we quite worrying about the cracks, maybe the cool hood of the Gen I/II cars would not be disappearing. Nothing compares to a Gen I/II hood when it is up, and the V-10 is on display
