Hey all, buying from a certain guy in Blair, NE, and I need to know what I have to give the DMV.

In particular, I know that I should only have to pay Michigan sales tax on the value of the car (ie, the price I paid to Woodhouse, minus gas guzzler, minus lux). Correct?

What piece(s) of info do I need to present to the filthy tax man?

If the car is new, you need to pay sales tax in Michigan on the entire amount you gave to the 'guy in Blair.' I ran into the same thing 2 years ago. If it's used, you wouldn't. Plus, if new, you'll probably need a temporary plate from NE if you're driving it home from there. I know I needed a temp. plate from New Hampshire, even though we did a factory pick up.

As I remember it, gas guzzler tax is part of invoice...lux. tax is not. In ~~~~~~~, we pay sales tax to our DMV (at the time we apply for title and registration) on purchase price...BUT NOT on lux tax. Last spring, one of our club ran into a dunce at the DMV who INSISTED that the lux tax was subject to sales tax. He paid the errant "tax on tax" (same COULD be said about sales tax on gas guz. tax...but apparently, that's a different circumstance) and applied for a refund and received same from the DMV. We have purchased 4 Vipers out of state...had NO TROUBLE with the DMV dealings...and paid NO SALES TAX on the lux. tax. By the way, the GUY in Nebraska can give you GOOD advice on the issue...Pemberton is THE MAN !!!

I just called 2 different DMV offices and got 2 different answers. The one I registered at said I owed the money on the total selling price. The other said base price and no additional tax on tax. I will look into it and file for a rebate if possible.

That's for the heads up Indy Steve

i went through the whole thing a month ago. the gas guzzler tax is part of the invoice- hence you pay tax on it (which is tax on tax really, but you still pay it). i have to check on the paperwork, but i think you _also_ pay tax on the lux tax because the sales tax is calculated based on the "price out the door" which is price+gas guzzler+lux tax

i know it is not fair, but this is how they do it
