Previously I started a thread to help fill out when fluids should be changed and with what (http://vca2.viperclub.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB14&Number=258628&Forum=UBB14&Words=&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=3months&Main=258628&Search=true#Post258628).

I have now revised the Viper Fluids chart to contain the extra information I received: http://www.yandros.com/ViperFluids.htm

If anyone has any additional information to add, please let me know, including any other differences for different cars (e.g., higher gen1 fuel capacity, etc.). Also, presumably this should now be placed somewhere on this board, probably under the "Illustrated" section and/or FAQ section (don't make it hard to find!) - I have it in Word and can convert to PDF if so desired.

Finally, since we all know fluids are not the only thing in need of maintenance, I'd like to collect info on other things (including part #s, alternative brands, frequency to change, etc.) that need typical maintenance. Offhand, I can think of the following:

Air Filter (probably need to discuss standard and K&N)
Fuel Filter
PCV Valve (which Vipers have this?)
Spark Plugs (from my experience, every 20k is perfectly fine)
Spark Plug Wires (from my experience, every 40k is perfectly fine; also, avoid Mopar blue wires for typical use as you may get static interference through the radio/CD player)

Anything else to include?

Also, any typical procedures for changing various fluids (e.g., Janni's post on changing power steering fluid: http://vca2.viperclub.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB14&Number=102234&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1), changing the aforementioned maintenance items, any info on special tools for any of this, where to get alternative items, etc. would be appreciated.

this is so well done; like I had mentioned last time. Alot of time and effort went into this, and the reason was to share knowledge with other Viper owners. Cool. Slaughterj, perhaps this table could be linked into the FAQ section of the board. It will no doubt be used by hundreds of people.

thanks

I disagree on going 40k on the wires, Slaughter. My experience was that I noticed a loss of power at 40k, which tells me that I should have replaced them sooner, maybe 30K. It's a cheap fix anyway. $63 from Tator.

That is an excellent chart. you did a great job on it. One thing I noticed in regards to the brake fluid (Valvoline synthetic). I don't know if Valvoline synthetic is the same as Dot 5 synthetic but if it is then it is not advisable to use it unless you are going to change all the internal rubber parts in the brake system and it is not compatible with any other brake fluid.
I know I will probably get some flak for this but I have a 95 Viper that I bought a year and a half ago with 17k on it. It now has 42k on it and on the recomendation of Tom Welch I use straight 30 weight Royal Purple or Golden Spectro synthetic oil in the transmission. I have run The Silver State Challange and a number of open track events and have never had a problem with the transmission. The first time I changed the oil I installed a magnetic drain plug and I just finished changing the oil last night and that drain plug did not have anything on it. This car has been driven hard but not drag raced. I also heard of people having their power steering units boiling over or melting and saw a number of expensive relocation kits and upgraded kits for this problem. I made a very simple heat shield to prevent the heat from getting to the power steering unit and have never had a problem with it. I can send some photos if you like.

Valveline synthetic is not DOT 5 Silicone fluid, but rather DOT 3/4.

Perfectly compatible with OEM brake fluid and used by many Viper owners for both brake and clutch applications.

I understand what you mean, but did you change the plugs and wires at the same time? I noticed a power dip at ~30k, and changed the plugs and wires, felt it pep back up, but I had changed to the blue wires which gave me static. I changed the blue wires back out to the original stock wires, and didn't notice a decrease, leading me to believe that it is the plugs, not the wires, that were the driving factor in the power dip. I drove with the original wires until 40k, and changed them to new stock wires, and didn't notice any change in performance, further leading me to believe the wires themselves last longer. I'd be interested in hearing from others who have just changed the plugs but ran the wires longer like I did...

I noticed a power dip at 30K so I changed the plugs and power was back.

I noticed another dip at 40K, changed the wires and plugs and everything was ok.

So now I change them both at 20K. Costs is about $80, which as you know is much less than a night at Mons.

Looks like Ron's covered the Valvoline question. How about posting some pics of the power steering unit heat shield and saying how you made it?

Anybody got any other typically replaced maintenance items other than the following:

Air Filter (probably need to discuss standard and K&N)
Fuel Filter

Spark Plugs (from my experience, every 20k is perfectly fine)
Spark Plug Wires (from my experience, every 40k is perfectly fine; also, avoid Mopar blue wires for typical use as you may get static interference through the radio/CD player)

One could consider the Fram CA-8093 air fliters as a cheaper replacement for stock.

Though I know 99% here are K&N believers, (and they do add a few HP) I still like the filtering ability of a clean paper filter.

I'm not sure on the change interval, but I am pretty sure that the fuel filter is in the tank and part of the pump assembly. Kinda hard to change.
