This %^^(#@*_ Oil Filter won\'t come off.. Any know any tricks?

I've done this a million times. Change the oil, filter, etc.
This is the 1st time an oil filter doesn't want to come off. I've twisted so hard w/ an oil filter wrench, it's lost it's shape. I've punched a hole thru it w/ a screwdriver but there isn't enough room to munipulate a turn. I've bought an oil filter wrench that clamps on to it and the ring gets smaller when you twist in the desired direction for on/off. Won't work , of course, because there is again, no room.
How can I get this *%%#_@#_ off!!??

I shortened the handle on a similar filter wrench to make it fit in the cramped space on a Gen I. Makes it hard to put alot of torque into it but allows greater turn per try. They make filter tools that fit over the end of the filter and use the depressions on the perimeter to turn the filter. Those generally use a 1/2 inch ratchet which may allow you to fit in if a angle joint is used. Last resort (which I have had to do on other cars) is to use a chisel or screwdriver on the flange in the loosening direction. Got to be careful with that approach though.

Good Luck,
Ron

I guess you will have to become a member of the polishing ranks then. Get out the Zaino!!!!!! Chuck probably tightened this up on ya when he was cruising around looking for cotton tops!!! Now he is laughing his a$$ off at you fumbling around. Looks as though you have chewed up the filter enough to drain all the oil out. Get some wire cutters and plyers out, rip off the outer housing, the filter media and so on. Eventually you will get to something study enough to whack at an angle with a screwdriver and hammer. Be careful around the filter threads. When in doubt use this phrase. "Righty tighty, lefty loosy"

Did you try a strap filter wrench with a 1/2" socket hole? Not a bottom grove wrench, I can't imagine that not working.

How about this -> get a 1/4" socket extension (6" long), a universal joint joint (90 deg) a 10" socket extension, and a 1/4" ratchet wrench. Put the 6" extension through the filter where you punched a hole with the screwdriver. Attach the universal joint to the end, aim towards the ground, then attach the 10" extension and unscrew with your ratchet wrench

I found an oil filter strap wrench that instead of a smooth single piece strap, has four banana shaped pieces hinged together with teeth on the inside. Same slotted adjustment for different sizes, but the hard teeth grab everytime. Good luck.

I've tried it all.. I just tried the "********". hehe..

I squeezed that one so hard also,I've compromised the integrety of the filter. Instead of turning, it now compresses. So it looks like tearing it apart is my best option now?

Nope Hoosier, I didn't do it.

Instead of using those big biceps he needs to use the muscle between his ears. Sheesh man, do I need to come all the way up there to fix it for you?

Re: This %^^(#@*_ Oil Filter won\'t come off.. Any know any tricks?

I had a similar problem with a car I had about 7 years ago. I could not get it off by hand or with an oil filter wrench. I tried the usual trick of punching a screwdriver through it and it still would not budge. I ended up completely ripping the metal completely off the base of the filter. Then used a chisel and hammer and still no good. Had to borrow my girlfriends car to go to work the next day while my car sat in her parents garage. So, I called the quick oil change place that I had change my oil 3 months earlier and they had some special tool they brought out to the house. Came right off. It was like a large adjustable wrench with teeth sorta. Maybe you can get a hold of one of those or borrow one from a quick oil change place or something. I know that spot is tight up there. Wish I had a dang lift in my garage because it is a pain in the **** everytime I change the oil on my Viper too. Good luck with your problem.

Hi Gerald,
I had the same problem on a 1994 RT/10.I finally took a large hose clamp and wrapped it near the top of the filter where it mounts to the engine.Once it is tightened you can tap on the screw that is on the clamp.I used a long piece of scrap wood to reach up.This did the trick for me but took awhile to figure out.Hope this helps.

If all else fails, you will probably have to remove the oil filter adapter casting from the engine. Carefully snug it down in a vise, then do what ya gotta do. Clean the gasket flange off carefully.

When you put the new filter on, be SURE to put a liberal coat of engine oil on the new filter gasket. I never tighten filters with tools. Hand-tighten only!

Thanks for all your help guys....!!!!

Got it... Had to use the strap again with a 17mm wrench on the extension and yanked like a b#*@h. It started to turn, but not after the filter was 1/2 the original size from compressing it.

Thanks again

OOPS!!! - I had the same problem on my brother's car - TORE THE CAN PART OF THE FILTER OFF, LEAVING THE RING STILL ON THE ENGINE!

At that point, I spent half a day welding up a jig (home-made thing-a-ma-jig tool) that fit into the eight filter holes (now visable, 'cause the can was off), then loosened it, and finally spun it off.

Not somehting I want to repeat twice. My advice - When the screwdriver tears the can, DON'T move up to pushing a half-inch rod through it.

Good to hear you shook it loose!
