Thoughts on Nitrous?

I have done the basic exhaust, springs, and gears to my GTS and I am very happy, but would like a little more. Would a mild nitrous kit be safe for a nearly stock motor? Being only 23 yrs old, I cannot afford the Hennessey, TNT, or DLM packages, but I would like a good 75-100 HP increase. For about the same price or less than headers, I could get that amt of power from NOS.

I am leasing my car also, so if anything were to happen or when I turn it in, can I remove the NOS and return the car to stock? TIA for any information or suggestions.

Mike,

If the dealership finds out you are using NOS on a leased vehicle, you are in deep sh*t. With a lease, the dealership still owns the car. In essence, you are renting with the possibility of buying at the end of the lease. All I can say is this: Don't let them find out you are doing this, or those lease payments will turn into ownership payments. And to be honest, I can't blame the dealer this time. There's a first for everything ;)

Later

P.S. - Do they know about the other mods you have done? If so, what did they say??? Although, I don't think your other mods would depreciate the resale value of the car, but NOS would IMHO.

Mike,

Welcome to the viper community.

Feel free to contact me for a test drive of one of our nitrous equipped snakes as we are only about an hours drive north of Tampa.

As for warranty, the dealer plays a major role in deciding warranty items. Remember that you drive the "flagship" of the Dodge brand and your customer satisfaction rating is paramount to Diamler Chrysler. At the last VOI in St. Louis, Vipers were crashed on the roadcourse...totalled!, the owners where GIVEN new vipers. Go figure.

The mods that are installed on your Viper have probably voided some portion of..or your entire warranty(should the dealer get technical). I have had a few items repaired/replaced under warranty on my own viper even though I have aftermarket exhaust and nitrous. Again, it depends on the mindset of the dealer.

25 years from now your Viper warranty is not going to matter. You won't take anything with you when you depart the planet one day either, so indulge yourself.

Just my $ .02

Tom

Thanks for the input everyone.

Sheyster, I probably wont buy out my Viper at the end of the lease. However, I have it for 3 more years, so might as well have fun with it. As long as I can remove the NOS when I am done, I dont think it should be a problem.

I have kept all the stock exhaust, gears, etc., so when I turn it in, the dealership wouldnt know. I realize the NOS, even a mild kit, is much more extreme than the mods I have done. That is why I wanted to ask around first.

Tom, thanks for your input, I have seen your website, which made me consider NOS in the first place. I drive up to Gainesville about once a month to visit my college buddies, so I would love to stop by your shop for a test drive.

IMHO if you are going with nitrous go with a wet system
or nitrous/propane system of BTR.I had a 200 shot NX system on my 96 GTS.I put 70,000 plus miles on the motor no ill effects.
This system devoured 123- 15 Lb bottles of nitrous.

I have BTR (Tom's) kit. It's a little more pricey than the standard one but if you want to sleep at night it's the right thing to do.

It is definitely the mod to do for biggest bang for the buck. I'm not sure I'd feel great about doing it on a lease vehicle but that is your call. If you are comfortable with it, go for it.

The only part you affect with this kit is the intake tubes, which you've probably replaced with smooth tubes already anyway. If not, you can make your own tubes really cheaply and then put the stock ones back on later when you pull the nitrous off.

Mike, the point is that if you have to go to your dealer for ANY warranty work, and they see the nitrous bottle in the trunk, you could be in deep doo-doo. The fact that you're leasing the car makes it even more of reason for the dealership to report their findings.
Technically, a dealer (or DC, for that matter) has to prove that whatever modification you made _caused_ the failure. They cannot simply void your whole-car warranty. You're protected by the laws of the aftermarket in that regard.
Since you're not planning on buying the car at the end of the lease, you should be very cautious of something like nitrous. If you DO install nitrous and turn your car back in to DC, please post your VIN so I don't buy your car off-lease!

Mike,

I've been doing a lot of research on NOS as of late. I've never wanted it on my Viper. I always wanted to have the fastest Viper, but w/o NOS. After hearing all sides from a lot of Tuners, I've learned that having NOS seems to be the only way. You could say Supercharger or TT but you said money was an issue. Our Viper President Prashant has a 150 shot on his Viper w/ basically the same mods I have & his car runs very reliablly. Really fast!! We race all the time & you can really tell the difference! So to answer your question, your Viper should be relatively safe w/ a conservative shot, say 100 - 150. I would stay w/ 100 after reading that you're leasing. Since NOS is so cheap, everyone seems to have it. I'm sure you know that every car on Saturday night from Corvette to Mustang has some NOS. If you want to be a little faster but don't have the cash handy for at least Heads/Cam then NOS is your only alternative.
