Tire \"SIPING\" helps traction

Drove Hoosiers in the rain, back from the dyno friday. Was ok @ 50mph(won't be a religious practice) thanks to Discount tires Siping process.Maybe all pilots should have it done. The siping maching cuts horizontal lines(knife edge slices) about 1/2"apart,1/4 deep across the tire.Widens the footprint and grabs the ground. They swear buy it for use on all street tires.Low cost.

Did the same thing to my Cherokee with Super Swampers for winter use. Really helped on wet/icy roads. Definate increase in traction. Didn't see any reduced tire life.

Siping gives rainwater a place to go instead of building up between the tread block and the road surface. When that happens, you get hydroplaning. In the dry and on the track, the friction between the blocks created by the siping *may cause* unusual wear patterns and additional heat buildup in the tread rubber, leading to shorter life.

Hoosiers (and I assume you're talking about R3SO3s) in my opinion, have little business on the street and no business at all on wet pavement - sipes or no. They are "cheater slicks" built for road racing. BTW, I hope they aren't siping your Hoosiers 1/4" deep, because there's only 3/16" of tread rubber on the tire in the first place. Any deeper than that, they'd be slicing cords in the casing.

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS">Would siping be an possible economical option for 5 year old full tread MXX3's... as a counter to hardening tread?

It's either P-Zeros or Pilots.Once purchased,I think i'll sipin them right away!1/2 tire life is ok,if I can have fresh Rubber all the time.

1) I agree 101% w/ GTS Dean on all points. That said -

2) YES, siping old XGT-Z or MXX-3 tires for street use only could indeed "revitilize" the rubber. But NEVER use them in track events. WATCH pressures carefully, as siped tread "squirms" (50?) times more than solid tread blocks, and builds up heat. And reduces tire life on hard, dry pavement.
But on a used, near-death tire, so what?

3) If siping made a difference on track or strip, it would be done regularly. Or cheated occasionally. Or outlawed by regulation. It is not.

Re: Tire \"SIPING\" helps traction

I would expect that the dealers prefer to sipe a fresh tire rather than one that has been driven on for the simple reason the blades used to cut the rubber are easily damaged by pavement residue. The same as shaving a tire, gravel, dust and abrasives in minute amounts can easily compromise the expensive blade edge.

Don't think many of us will use our cars on ice, but when siping a high performance tires there is little benefit in the cold and ice. Compound is the key to ice traction, must be soft. Most HP tires are soft in 50+ temps but get harder as the temp goes down. It is like putting sipes in linoleum.

Richard, Nice to see a response back up by some proof. I think most of us NEED proof rather than opinion. In the long run it helps us all make educated decisions. Thanks for the input.

Thanks Richard,Tire talk is all good. Some of the faster 1/4 guys are boasting/posting P-Zeros.I'd say pilots are the man overall.
