Hi All, I am installing a borla cat back next week on my 96 GTS! Should I eliminate the cats or install hi flows or maybe reuse the stock ones. What would be the pluses and minuses, horsepower gains etc for each senario. Does mopar make a hi flow for this app. Thanks in advance...AL...00PROWLER...

Al- Since no one else has jumped in, here goes. I think your 96 has side pipes, right? I just put a cat back system on my 92 this week. It is a Belanger System designed specifically for side pipe cars. Stock cats get modified (trimmed) to accept the 3" pipe from the back of the cat into the muffler. I asked JonB when the kit came in; Where are the High Flo Cats? His answer was; Not included. I do not recccomend that you use high flo cats on a side pipe car. To loud!
I am very happy with the system I got. It sounds just like the 96 Pace car at CAAP. Very Deep, very strong and when you give it gas it roars. When I start it in the garage it sounds nice and loud. If it were any louder, I think it would be uncomfortable driveing it.

I think all GTS's (production) are rear exhaust, but I could be wrong. My opinion. HIGH FLOW CATS. Will only lose a couple HP (2-5), and no smelly fumes to deal with. Sean Roe has nice ones that I use. Only $125 each. Well worth it.....

Definately go with Sean's high flow cats.. you will add some volume, but one a rear exhaust it won't be so bad. And the stock cats are soooo restrictive...

CATS OFF!! Get a set of 02 simms from Roe(Stops the stink from the exhaust). Also, gets rid of that soot on the rear facia. My car dynoed 434rwh 473rwt. I have been running the 1/4 at 123. Only mod no cats, and no rear muffler. Also, no staggering heat inside. Check my many other posts on this subject. P.S. I have a 00 Cream Puff

Would a 96 R/T(Gen I) require the simms? I know we don't have a problem with the "check engine" light, but does it affect the air/fuel mixture?

I believe so, you may need to ask someone with better Gen 1 experience. If you are OBDII and have rear o2s I would think so. The 02 simms mimic the signal of the cats being there so, the car doesn't run super rich. Regardless of some of the opinons on the board these cars will run better with out cats. My dyno & time slip prove it.....

00prowler,

I have a 96 GTS with TNT headers and Borla exhaust. I have run it with and without hi-flow cats.

First - there are no problems with the check engine light as the 96 computer reads the rear O2 sensor but does not use the signal.

Second - with headers, hi-flow cats are pretty loud, no cats are really loud. Without cats, full throttle in 3rd gear is just over 100db in cool damp air - or so they said after I was black flagged at Laguna Seca - my last lap of the day, I had to go full throttle from 5 to 6 just once.

Third - having dyno'ed the car both ways, there is less than 5 hp difference between the two. I would make the decision based on sound.

Either way you go, the Borla exhaust sounds really good. Enjoy.

I agree with 'going with the sound' I have heard the Belanger system with and without cats. There is a difference, with the catless being louder. If you like sound--go without. We did and love it. Ours is the complete Belanger set up: Headers/4 Walker Race Bullet mufflers.
Fortunately, I will never be on a track that has a noise limit. When we rumble by, many our of neighbors only want to know when they're going to get a ride. I have had zero negative feed back from the neighbors. At highway speeds, it's quite tame.
