Hey Scott (love that name):

As an expensive alternative, you can purchase a SnakeOyl or Precision made mat (matches the floor mats) that is made for the trunk. It's thick enough so that it works as a shelf, You can store flat things and various items that will fit inside the spare rim, below and everything else above. It also adds a bit of class when you open the trunk and see a beautiful mat with Viper logo. I bought the Precision version (3 piece) but they're all good. I think JonB may even sell them at some discount. Good Luck!

Would there be any issue with the stereo amps overheating if they are covered with a mat?

I can only speak re: a GEN 2 but the amp is attached vertically and the mat is actually cut out so it barely touches the bottom of the amp as it is attached. 99% of the amp is uncovered so heat is no issue.

I am actually building one this weekend. Two sections of thin plywood, covered with black carpet...
